So i got the new alienware area 51-7500 a month ago, i sorta quit wow, but then before i sell my account i thought id do some last arenas with friends, i went on and started doing BG, and then realized its lagging, i start with 220 or so MS, once i get into BG or roam around lolforge, latency goes up to 400-500, it still wont lag just yet thou, but it will give me some lag spikes, completely random.. i installed latest nvidia drivers but still same, tried changing settings, but nothing. I have a modem connected to router, and im using the USB connector for the wi-fi for the desktop, all three are new so its definitely not that. and i can surf net and download w/o problems aswell. So is it vista or am i missing something?

This shouldn't have anything to do with Vista.

Sounds like the issue is in your network settings or network adapter. WoW shouldn't need you to open ports for simple playing, but you might try going to their support site and configuring your router settings.

Run Windows Update and see if there is anything for your wireless network adapter.

I run WoW on a Macbook Pro running Vista Ultimate without any lag over 300ms, even if I am using my cellphone bluetooth connection as an internet modem. Connected to my University's network, I never get above 100ms.

i have been out lately, i logged on my ps3 and i experienced a bit of lag while playing cod4 aswell, can it be my dsl or router? i checked and my dsl speed report seems normal with 1.5 mbs, i also tried connecting ethernet directly to ps3, but same issue...

First I would think your ISP or internet service, thats the primary source of latency.

Try going to a site like speedtest.net and run a few tests to see what your latency is.

Second it could be the server for WoW is just sucking or far away from you.

Third it could be bad settings/drivers for your network. If you make it this far without finding the problem with 1 or 2, then may as well do a fresh install of your drivers, reset your modem/router (hard reset) and make sure clear up any setings that could effect you (and make sure somebody else didnt do something like throttle your bandwidth in the router settings, or do bad port forwarding)

Also just make sure you have a clean install of things, no spyware holding you back, no evil firewall or virus scanner causing problems.

The causes can be pretty vast, but just go thru them one by one and you should find it.

edit: just saw your new post you posted it as I was writting, so you pretty much confirmed its your internet hardware (modem/router) or the ISP, so just follow my above.

Also your speed test, its not your bandwidth you need to look at its the latency/ping.

yeah like he said pull out the cable from the micro filter to the router then reset it it should be at the back of the router if not you could try turn it off for 10 sec then turn it on and let it search and or config it self after a short moment replace the cable also check that you are not using windows firewall as well as your norton/mcafee firewall.have you tryed the ethernet cable in the lappy and is there anything that could be interfearing with the wifi signal do you have your sercurity set up as someone maybe nicking your bandwidth.one last thing are you a heavey user as you maybe maxing your connection limit because if i use my connection a lot it seems that i get the same effect and at the start of a new month things get speedy again.i hope this helps. :)

    Thnks for reply!

i have a bit "***" update, i run a motel, i got back from college and one of the customers called me and i saw he was playing ps3, i asked him if he was playing thru the wifi from office, he said yea. He hooked the internet on his desktop thru wi-fi usb connector and added the ethernet cable to his ps3. i came to office and started playing ps3, i only had 2 bars and crazy lag spikes. I just logged on wow, and it still had same issue , 2500 latency, whats confusing me is why doesnt any of the customers using my wifi dont get lag/dc?

Edit: My ping is only 90-100, did test 5-10 times in 2 days

Too many variables here.. I would suggest looking up the IP address of the WOW server/realm. Then perform latency tracing between your ISP and that server.

Blizzard has servers everywhere, it's best you play on the server that is closest or has the best ping rate.

I work at a hotel too, and sometimes when the net is slow its because somebody is hogging all the bandwidth. Especially file sharing and things like that can bring a network down to its knees, thats why we have a soft cap on bandwidth per user.
