Sorry if there is another thread but can someone tell me the main differences between these games? They look exactly the same.

they are all originating from the original Dota, which was a custom map designed for warcraft 3. they have some stuff different (some heroes, some items, engine and so on) but essentially they are the same, corridor defense

My friends all say games that are like Dota and LoL are a new sub-genre. So, I guess you can say there are the same thing, but you'll know the differences. Like CoD and BF3. I'm still trying to find out that difference.

    Currently:
    HoN>DoTA2>LoL>DoTA

    In the foreseeable future:
    DoTA2>HoN>LoL>DoTA

HoN and DoTA2 are pretty much straight copies of DoTA mechanics, except HoN has slightly different heroes and items. DoTA2 is in beta right now so there's some problems with it but it will just be DoTA with updated graphics. LoL is a significantly dumbed down of DoTA but it has a bunch of modern features (e.g. reconnecting after a disconnect, better graphics) that make it better than the original DoTA.

the dota2 community is really abysmal :( most of the matches i see turn into berating fests with a bunch of people quitting. i'm curious how the other communities stack up.

    Pretty much.

Unless you're playing some type of ranked mode all the communities are like this. These are "hardcore" games and people usually don't take kindly towards noobs, brazilians, or anyone who just isn't any good.

in my opinion LoL is much better community wise. The game is easier to learn which can be good and bad, but i say it's better because you can get friends to play. The more the merrier right? HoN's balance is really bad, every hero is overpowered/carry. There aren't really specific roles which I like to see = teamwork. Remember this is all in my opinion. DoTA2 looks exactly like HoN I can't even tell the difference besides the UI

Extremely debatable as to the equation of which game is better than which. Some like HoN, some like LoL, some like DoTA2 (so far).

All 3 are polished games, all with their differences to make each one unique. What are those differences? All the little things that make up the game mechanics and abilities of all the heroes. At the end of the day, the objectives are the same and you go about achieving them essentially the same way.. but all the little things you learn and do on the way make each game unique.

TL;DR - all 3 have something to offer. All 3 are also available free at the moment. Pick em up and try!

Meh. Don't care about graphics or features, DotA is the bomb. Nothing beats it a far as
Hero design, balance, well thought out weapons and skills, and just straight fun. I can see Dota 2 being better with updated mechanics when it's finished

Classic DoTA is awesome but the 100-200ms latency and lack of leaver prevention is extremely hard to put up with after playing HoN/LoL. DoTA2 also has some latency but I'll chalk that up to beta servers for now.

Unless I'm scrimming with friends, DoTA 1 isn't much fun to me due to lag and leavers.

Pfft people complaining about 100-200ms latency. Baka dreams to get that latency.

-Plays LoL with 240ms minimum, around 300-600ms HoN-

ive only tried Dota, Dota2 and Hon and hon is still my favorite. hon receives weekly updates and seems to have faster gameplay which makes everything seem more fluid. also the graphics are better.

hon was basically supposed to be dota with better everything and more features like leaving/reconnect in the middle of a game. personally i think its better balanced than dota

hon is the best one atm for me, gameplay and mechanics wise. too bad s2 cant make any balanced heroes of their own, most of their new heroes are banned in hon tournaments due to being pure imba.

lol's gameplay/mechanics is just way different and inferior to dota. plus the latency from their servers dont help.
