Why?![]()
I'd love to play a good scary horror FPS game.
-
I guess it is not a very popular genre. I'd love to have more horror but more poeple would need to love them to become mainstream (like modern FPSs).

Boo! <ten chars>

I thought there are plenty. Another one was just released recently. Afterfall: Insantiy.
There will be a horror MMORPG soon. The Secret World 2012 release, from the makers of The Longest Journey.
Dead Island, Dead Space 2, Amnesia, Afterfall: Insanity, The Ball. Fallout New Vegas, Alien v Predator, Return of Alice, RAGE are just to name a few from 2011... -
Don't forget F.E.A.R 3, Metro 2033
Stay away from RAGE, or you'll be Raging (LOL)
-
Dead Space?
Amnesia: Dark Descent? -
PACMAN

Yeah I think there are a lot. Imho left for dead made zombies and horror mainstream.
When I watch zombieland and walking dead, I see left for dead the movie and tv series.

dead space games are really good, especially when you game in hardcore mode
i think the modern definition of horror is survival imo
in DS 1 and 2, there is a modern sci fi click to it, shooting limbs and they come chasing after you.
in fear, i think the best one in the series are the first ones. in fear 3, they focused more on the shooting mechanics (which is impressive imo) other than the suspense factor.
in metro 2033, they have good eerie atmosphere, although somehow linear, but still gets good recognition as a suspense game. again, survival comes in the picture. -
How old are you? I play Left 4 Dead and I see an uncountable number of George A Romero movies made into a video game.
The true master of horror and father of modern day mainstream zombie flicks. -
Insane (2013), scary as a crepper - YouTube Here is the game for you
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
Left 4 Dead is definitely just another member of the zombie genre rather than a trend-setter as trvlbug suggested. It's not even the first big zombie video game of the current era (if the current era began with the Xbox 360, that probably goes to Dead Rising, though I'm open to being wrong).
Pardon me if I digress, but the bolded comments above seem to be mutually exclusive
Oh, that one was released in 2013? Goody, I'll just go to my local game store and pick it up next time I have a chance.
On-topic, in addition to vanilla Amnesia (and the Penumbra games), there are a number of mods earning acclaim for Amnesia as offering more, scarier, and/or more innovative gameplay, but generally in the same vein as the original. After watching the concept videos for "Unknown" (Amnesia's early builds, from which it was significantly stripped down to great effect), I kind've wish Frictional would make the full-featured game as well with NPC's, quests, etc., though the design decisions that stripped it down to what it ended up as were probably good decisions.
There are also a number of pretty good horror mods for the Source Engine from what I understand, though I haven't dabbled in that stuff for a couple years. -
im older than you, but i dont consider romero movies going mainstream. maybe for some american they are, but for the rest of the world, they arent.
-
I don't think the above (bolded) games are horror: they are more like post-apocaliptic, sci-fi or simply twisted fantasy ... but definitely not horror in the first place.
-
Do you know where I can find them? I played Amnesia and it was great!!
-
*Facepalm* My bad guys, I didn't see the release date
-
actually, i was talking exclusively about pc gaming. also in my country/region and from the pc forums ive seen, l4d does seem like the first big zombie video game.
-
that's the confusing part of the internet. We all sometimes forget that we are talking to people that might be on the complete opposite side of the world from us.
Back on topic, I think a PC game adaptation of Stephen King's Rose Red could make for an interesting game if done right. Not one of his best movies, but a video game about being stuck inside of a haunted house and having to try and get out before it kills you could be quite fun. -
i havent played amnesia, but the reviews of it reminds me of the first half of call of Cthulhu. you basically have to avoid the horrors or use your wits to survive. to me thats the scariest kind of game- where you are so vulnerable.
-
^^ Exaclty, Amnesia is freakin scary, and anyone who thinks that Dead Space 1 or 2 were scary really dont understand what scary is. The whole point of being scared in a video game is when you feel helpless against the monster as in Amnesia. I have played Dead Space 1 and there was no single moment where i felt genuinely scared.
Metro 2033 is also kind of scary thanks mostly to the environment and the eerie atmosphere. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Condemned. That one is really nice (scary).
-
I forgot all about that game. I had it for 360 though instead of the pc, but I loved it. It wasn't horror type scary, but it definitely made me jump multiple times when walking around in the dark just to turn the corner and see someone already at half swing with a pipe aimed at your head.

Skyrim certainly isn't a horror game but alot of the dungeons are filled with undead that are similar to zombies. They even have eerie music and dimly lit caves. They also have vampires and werewolves.
Lack of horror games
