Here's the thing.
I am running a game on my laptop in medium-high settings without any noticeable lag or stuttering. But when I connect my laptop to my hdtv via hdmi, I get massive lag while gaming. Almost unplayable. While connected to the hdtv, I tried lowering the settings but the lag was still there. Any idea, why?
Max. resolution on my laptop is 1366x768 and my hdtv is 1080p. While connected I lowered the resolution of my pc to 1280x720 but the stuttering was almost the same. Another thing, my tv still displays 1080, 50Hz.

Try turning off all the artificial picture smoothing options. Every hdtv has their own brand and name of picture smoothing/enhancement. Once you find what it is...turn it off. It's a sinch, you just have to look for it.
If I can find it on my Japanese Sony Bravia, you've got no excuse not to find it in English
. Goodluck

Trying to find a gaming/smoothing mode may help, but the issue is that HDTVs have more input lag than monitors. You may be able to ameliorate it by fiddling with the controls, but it may end up being noticeable no matter what

Once you find the right setting the difference is night and day.

Dammit just checked that link, my 70" Sharp TV has 58.1ms input lag
Does 58.1ms really make that much of a difference though? -
Some TVs even have a PC mode that turns off all processing to make lag liveable. This issue is common, but the solution is usually easy.

Awesome, turns out my tv has this mode
. But I can't test it until I finish building my new desktop >.<"

Input lag (latency) is not the same as stuttering (like you described) I would imagine your problem is your drivers not working so well with HDMI output, your HDMI cable itself is also worth looking at, and lastly your settings for output.
You said 50Hz and that is not standard as far as I know unless maybe in another region because every TV I have seen is 60Hz standard and if your outputting 50Hz instead that could be causing some issues. -
I didn't see a description of stuttering, the user does say lag several times though? 50Hz is common in Europe or the UK, i.e. other countries other than the US.

I'll try updating my drivers as I just checked, they aren't the latest. My TV doesn't have a game mode. BTW when connected via HDMI it says input signal is 1080p near the 50Hz. Any idea how do I change that? My pc screen is 720p and the desktop resolution is set to 1366x728 so I guess that or 720 should be the input.

1280x720 is the common 720P 16:9 Aspect ratio resolution.
1366x728 is not as common but you should find out what the native resolution of your display is. -
Which TV do you have? Did you go into the TV menu and turn off all picture processing?
-
Panasonic TH-L42E6D LED. I didn't find any video processing options at all, but I did turn off/low the ones that I found like, picture mode - Normal, Cinema etc, surround off etc.
-
I couldn't find a manual for that model. But try turning off or set to none, everything under menu, picture, advanced. Remember what they were before so you can set them back.

did the OP change his post? looks like he makes no mention of stuttering -
I tried changing everything I can see in the options to low/off/normal.
This might be confusing.
What I mean is the game runs slow, Very low FPS, unplayable. I am playing single player.
I think, it'll be stuttering/frame drops. This thread isn't about latency.
BTW, can anyone tell me about this. When TV is turned ON, a small box shows the input signal specs like 1080p, 60Hz. When connected to HDMI, I have set the resolution to 1366x768 and 720p too but the input signal remains the 1080p every time. Could this be the issue for the stuttering in games?
