Hi all
Ive recently been thinking about upgrading my HP Elitebook 8540p laptop. Now the current spec is pretty decent but the GPU is letting it down big time:
I7 3ghz cpu
8gb MEM
Nvidia NVS 5100M
I didnt realise this until today but the GPU can actually be replaced (i thought it was soldered in) but I have no idea what to be looking at as a replacement.
The current GPU is roughly 88m long and 76mm wide with little space to fit anything bigger.
So with that in mind would anyone know of a good gpu for roughly the same size that would fit and benefit my laptop? Ive searched around but struggling to find anything![]()
Thanks in advance

Unless your laptop is MXM 3.0 compatible (which I don't believe it is, though I may be wrong) you won't be able to easily upgrade your gpu. The vast majority of notebook gpus are soldered onto the motherboard.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
i think its mxm 2.1, depends on what you want to do with that gpu so we can try pointing you to whichever is beat but i think he m6000 might fit

Thanks for the reply. I want to give me gaming a significant boost

Your notebook uses a MXM 3.0 Type A card, and the FirePro M6000 is a Type B, so it will be physically too large to fit. The Radeon HD 6770M would be the fastest card for this slot, but you will likely have to modify your heatsink for it to fit properly.

Thank you! At last ive got somewhere, been struggling for days to figure out! Well the 6770M isnt that great compared to what I have looking at the benchmarks so its probbaly best just getting a new laptop?

I guess it all depends on your expectations (and your budget.) You could certainly find an excellent gaming machine in the $1k-2k range.
And I apologize for my ignorance in my earlier post; I'm not at all familiar with Elitebooks

Honestly if your looking for a big boost in gaming performance your going to just want to upgrade your whole laptop. Do what i did which was sell my old laptop and then just add more money on top of that. A 6770m was what i had before I upgraded my laptop and i can honestly say I was not impressed with it. It fell behind with the latest games. In the long run your better off just upgrading your laptop instead of going through the work of modifying your current laptop.
