I am looking at a new laptop which comes with a 1440x900 panel. Now this is obviously lovely for general work, watching DVDs etc, but I am a bit concerned about its gaming performance.

Presumably very few games will actually support this resolution so I will be forced to play them at a lower resolution. Is there a particular resolution that will fit well into this display? And do most games that come out now tend to support widescreen displays?

My laptop (see sig) has that resolution. It's the most common on 17" widescreens. Almost all newer games support it

all new games support virtually all resolutions available to the consumer

however...old games will most likely not support widescreen, or "unpopular" resolutions.

If your video card has adequate power to play at 1440x900 (say, a Geforce 7600 or Radeon X1600), then it will have enough power to play at that resolution.

You may want to tune-down the graphics to increase your framerates (say, turning it down to 1280x800). Graininess won't really be that big of a problem, because WXGA is not that large of a shrink compared to WXGA+. If you play 800x600 on a WXGA+ screen ... well, then you'll start to see graininess. I'm force to play Half Life 2 at 640x480 on this WXGA 1280x768 laptop because the graphics card sucks, and it's super grainy.

I have a notebook with that resolution. There are many ways to get around this problem. Many games have patches, there is also a universal patcher somewhere out there .Currently it supports few games like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, NFS Underground etc, you could also look for guides to correct the resolution for individual games.
BTW, which games do you intend to play? Maybe I could help you find patches if you can name a few games you plan to run.
