Hi there, quick question regarding sound output.

    1) Bought a monitor w/o speakers and using it to connect to the laptop through HDMI. Since there will be no sound coming from the monitor, how can I have it playing from a)laptop b)external speakers?

    2) Since I want to leave my laptop on the desk connected with an external monitor - can i turn on the laptop without opening the lid?

If you hook a standard headphone plug to your speakers system whatever it may be you should be able to get sound that way.

There is a setting in power options to let your computer stay awake with the lid closed.

But can i have sound coming out of the laptop with the lidshut and hdmi connected?

When i start the computer with a push of a button w/o opening the lid can it run straight onto the external moniter?

Yes the setting called "do nothing when the lid closes" effectively changes nothing about the operation of the computer when the lid closes, only turns the screen off.

And yes your computer will recognize the hdmi output once it boots

Sorry misunderstood you for a second, you can have the laptop speaker going with the lid shut, it might be a little muffled but it will work. Or you can hook it up to speakers via the headphone port.

It's funneh cause you cannot press the power button with the lid closed. But I can boot my lappy with the lid closed on an external monitor. So yes, you can do it but you need the lid open to press the power button.

Some desktops have BIOS options to wake on a keystroke or by a USB event, WoL, etc. But unless you have a business laptop with WoL and another device to wake it, the lid has to get opened if only for a second or two.
