    Hi

I'm doing some research on some laptops and I wanna know how will this laptop perform game-wise compared to my current desktop.

    Here are the specs:

    Desktop
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (2.41 GHz)
    2 GB RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS
    Windows XP Media Center 32bit

    Laptop
    Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1 GHz)
    4 GB RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS
    Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

    Thanks

I will guestimate it'll be about half as powerful (i.e. need to drop settings from "high" to "medium" or lower in order to get some close framerates in newer games.)

I reckon your desktop will be a good bit superior, as the GTS would be a lot better card than a lower end GS.

    4GB RAM with a 32bit OS?!

I'd imagine it could run source games decently enough, COD4 on medium I think, Crysis Low-Medium for a stable FPS.

An 8400GS has approximately 1/3 the fill rate of your 8600GTS. It also has a 64 bit memory bus versus the 8600 GTS' 128 bit memory bus.

How much RAM is on the card? With 128MB the card is weakish compared to a desktop 8600GTS, but with only 64MB of RAM, the card is really going to get hammered.

Dunno, that's all the info I've got. It's an HP just in case.

Yeah, I think I should start looking for other options because even my desktop is somewhat crappy at gaming.

I have this card and it perform alright. I thought it was going to be pretty bad but I can play Source games maxed out at native 1280 x 800. Other games like Quake Wars and COD4 and Unreal Tournament 3 I can play at slightly lower resolution and average about 30-40fps. Oh and I have 4GB ram and 32Bit OS as well and it is great, even though I can't use the last 1GB.

The laptop specs you provided aren't for the M70VM-C2 - was that your intention?

Why not just slap a 9800 GX2, GTX 280, GTX 260, 9800 GTX, or 8800 GTX into your desktop? Then your gaming performance increases dramatically. Price wise you're looking at $200-$700 extra.

Desktop 8600GTS is infinitely better then Go8400 - to say it's about half as fast is still very wrong, it's much slower then that. 8600GTS is same as, or little faster then, desktop 7900GS/GT class cards. It scores about 5.5k in 3dmark06, what does the 8400 get? 1.5k maybe?

Thats system would get about 1800 or so on 3dmark06.
I Play CSS and DODS on High Settings bout 60fps avg, not a great card would only recommenced if you only game occasionally like me.
I'm estimating it could play newer games on low settings reasonabley but its certainley not for a Regular gamer.
