    I know this might sound stupid but would it be possible for an nvidia 8800 gts card from a gateway p6831 fx laptop to be moved into a desktop?

    No.........they are two entirely different form factors and designs.

    Other than the fact stated above the Gateway FX series don't have removable MXM graphics cards either.
