I turn off Power Play to make sure that my GPU isnt underclocked yet my framerate in WaW is poor and about halfway into the first level, the whole system just shuts off! Whats more weird is that ive played countless recent PC games on it including WaW as well as Black Ops in good settings and framerate and never have i had this problem.

The system is now 2 years old, can it really be that the GPU is dying? Ive noticed that it gets hotter quicker too these days. Can it be a case of me needing to clean out any dust inside or am i looking at a system thats on its way out?

when was the last time you cleaned your fans and vents out. sounds like an overheating turn off to protect hardware.
run HW Monitor to check temperatures. find it in my signature below.

Notebooks shut down when they overheat.
Cleaning out the fans would probably fix it.

I have CPU-Z and GPU-Z, temps are a little higher than when i remember even on idle. Since for the past year ive been leaving my laptop on stand (unfolded) on a carpet floor (i wake up with lots of particles on top of the system), im guessing it is just clogged up.

One question though, how likely is it that you can overuse your GPU? My GPUs clock is 650mhz but is downclocked to 450mhz, and when in powerplay, both are at 100/150mhz respectively.

Would the GPU dieing be an explanation for my poor framerates?

when you start getting lines and artifacts on the screen is the time to worry.
sounds like you need to have a clean out every month if its in them sort of conditions.

No artifacts yet, but does general use make the GPU not perform as well especially overtime?

any electrical board or chip has a shelf life but there is no specific time scale of when it can pack up. if you overclock then you will shorten its life.
my 9800gt card lasted just under 3 years but others lasted longer and quite a lot died much earlier than mine.
general use shouldnt make any difference over time. but upgrading drivers can help especially for newer games that come out.

I vote for cleaning it, sounds hefty especially since laptops basically attract dust like no other
