I am currently looking to buy the Asus g73, which obviously utilizes the ATI Radeon 5870. However, is there any laptops out there or about to come out that use a more powerful graphics card (or two) which will outdate the Asus, and under $2000? Any help appreciated!
-
i somewhat asked that question, and under 2000 $ it is very very unlikely.
5870 directly competes with gtx 480m, which is Nvidia's new best mobile gpu, but it's very expensive (480m) , so try CFing the 5870 in an alienware, it shouldnt be much -
The only laptop graphics that beat the 5870 is either a crossfire setup with two 5870's or an nvidia 480m.
-
i would not configure the 5870 with alienware when i could purchase the Asus G73, which in my opinion beats Alienware hands down if you want the best for your money. Like Sony, you pay for the name of Alienware than the package actually delivered IMO. This isnt a dig by the way just my opinion!
. I cant find any laptops really, so im thinking im just gonna go with the G73. Unless there is any upcoming models hitting the streets soon, but i cant seem to find any info on this?!

just buy the asus g73 or wait 'til 2011 for the 6000MR
-
i'd advise waiting but it's your call
-
what is the 6000MR?? Do you have a link/info on this?
-
He just means the next generation of ATI cards. There's not much information yet.
-
ah ok, and thats not till 2011?? Hmmmmm i'm having itchy feet haha really wanna get a laptop sooN! :S
-
you can't wait forever so... even then if you but a laptop, there will be new GPU's availiable in 2012
-
just get 5870M.. its qiuite awesome already and u can get a new one in 2012...
-
Dont tell this to too many people, you can haggle alienware reps, its a solid aluminum build, and for xfire 5870s with I7 and 6 gb 1333 mem with blu ray drive its like 2700 roughly plus haggle room, probably looking around 2300 ish. Matter of opinion though .

And then in two years upgrade to whatever is the best thing
For the next two years there aren't any games in the news that the G73jh won't be able to play on high settings. -
-
Yeah, new tech seems to come around every six months or so. Waiting for "the next best thing" is an exercise in futility. Right now HD 5870 is absolute best bang for the buck. The GTX 480m is nothing more than a power hungry heat sink. The 5870 will be a good contender for at least another year and with a little overclocking should get you about two for gaming.
-
id say stick with the 5870 also.
however you may want to check out other laptops with replaceable gpus like AW or sager for this.
although i like the g73 ad would have probably bought it if it was available during my time of purchase, it has a proprietary gpu setup. when the new ati 6xxx comes out or even newer mmx 3b cards you may not be able to swap them into a g73
well just my 2 bits -

Dual 4870's are stronger than a single 5870. But the 5870 is all around a better card.
I upgraded from a W90 with dual 4870s to a G73 with the single 5870. The result was a loss of game performance but also a loss of any of the common dual card issues.
A net gain is a smaller, lighter, cooler running laptop as well. -

x7200 is all powerful but cost like $4,000 (we presume).

-
I guess it serves as a UPS of sorts, mostly.
-
But then again, the world needs a standard/borderland to achieve; in this case having a beastly laptop that other companies will try to follow in by steps can influence many designs in a laptop.

Laptops that utilize a card better than ATI's 5870?
