Just got the game, for free I might add and yes it's the retail version but , when I go to install, Steam doesn't execute, thus not letting me install the game !

Been to Steam and and looked at there 87 different remedies and of course 2 possible culprits are adaware and AVG, which I'm running. They actually tell me to un-install AVG..........................WTH ?

Seems to me the issues are with "STEAM" not being compatible with other software and that Steam is just passing the buck so that they don't have to deal with their own software !

Just venting I guess.....................anyone else have issues with Steam ?

Where did you get L4D, if not through Steam?

And are you saying that Steam itself does not start up on your computer? Do you have an account already? Can you log in on another computer?

Are you referring to this article? Have you tried disabling AVG when you run Steam? If you set up your permissions right, you shouldn't have to disable it though.

To be fair, I've never had an issue with Steam not working with different software, and I've tried many of the programs on the list I linked above. It's probably something on your end that's preventing Steam from working and not Steam itself that's not working.

    Almost none for me.

I'm in my fourth year with Steam, and have never had compatibility issues throughout 3 different laptop and desktop systems, in XP and Vista, with AVG and Avast antiviruses.

If AVG gives you trouble, though, I suggest you get rid of it and install Avast.

I've never had trouble running Steam on various systems, and all of those systems ran a combination of AVG, Ad-Aware, and Spybot.

No problems so far with Steam.

    @ rdalev:
Are you saying that the Steam software is not installing or that L4D is not installing? I've tried to read your sentence but seems a bit ambiguous to me.

Try reinstalling Steam. Backup your working games first so you don't have to download them again.

Add "Steam.exe" to your various security software (firewall, antivirus, etc) to prevent it from being blocked.

AVG is becoming about as bad as Zone Alarm is now, it's bloated and slow, even a fast system is made sludgy by AVG.
