So my new gaming laptop is coming this week, and I want to try L4D.
Should I get the original, or do ya'll think that it's going to be totally blown away by L4D2 and I should just wait for that?
-
-
I think you should just wait and save yourself..what $40? I'm waiting until the second one comes out myself!
-
i'd get it. its only 30 dollars and there are 4 soon to be 5 campains as well as a bunch of user made maps and campains. after left 4 dead 2 comes out there will be smaller community probably but you will still be able to find games.
-
2 months of use out of it doesn't really seem worth the $30 to me. I think he's better off waiting and putting that plus only a bit more towards the brand new game, since the community will all but disappear from the original it's really not worth it.
-
he will get more than 2 months of use out of the game. many, many people are boycotting left 4 dead 2, and also there is still a good possibility of valve connecting the communities so left 4 dead wotn just die. however, he might want to wait for left 4 dead 2 to come out cause after the release im sure a price drop will happen again.
-
Why are they "boycotting" the successor to a game that they love? What's wrong with it?
-
nothing, they just dont want to pay 50 dollars for a new game when the old one was released a year ago. they think it should be a dlc, even though it is bigger than the original game. also they think that valve will drop support for left 4 dead even though they said they would support it for years to come.
-
Sounds pretty idiotic....most of the people saying that will buy L4D2 anyway.

They're planning on adding a fifth campaign? Interesting.
I'd like to read up on that. Source? -
I recently purchased L4D for $22 from a member here, unused hard copy
Id say its worth it, even if you only play it for 2 months. At least you wont be clueless when L4D2 comes out -
Thanks for the comments.
I admit I haven't read a ton about L4D2...what's new? Melee weapons, slightly upgraded graphics, more content. They can't have upgraded the game engine much in only a year, could they have?
Would the original run on a AMD64 3500+ / 1GB Ram / ATi x1950 on low-moderate settings? I'd love to play with my brother, but he's a poor college student, and donating this ancient machine is his best bet for gaming.
I was considering waiting till 2 comes out for another price drop. I bought Crysis + Warhead along with my pc...how long should those last (hrs gameplay)? -
The graphic card in that desktop should work fine, but the CPU will choke the game up. Left 4 Dead is very CPU demanding, due to the AI director, plus the amount of zombies on the screen. A horde will slow a decent mid end laptop down in no time.

Agreed. Proved its a Nvidia 8 series with a 128bit card bus and 256MB of video ram or above (and the ati equivalents) you should be fine in the graphics department. Cpu however you will be looking at least a two core processor well over 2ghz to get things running well. Oh and 2GB of ram at least under vista or 7. -

Much thanks. Poor 360 owners got screwed, though. -

I played Left 4 Dead 2 extensively on PC and Xbox 360 at E3 this year. I'm also a Left 4 Dead PC player.
I suggest getting L4D. $30 is a small price to pay for the entertainment value it packs. It will have an active user community long after L4D2 is released. You won't be able to appreciate the improvements in L4D2 without playing the original.
L4D2 is essentially the same game as L4D, which is why a lot of users are boycotting it. It is a very serious issue on the Valve forums. -
I say get the original now, and if you have some money in November, get the second also.

L4D was really fun at first, but it kinda got old fast for me. Id get it for $20 but not more than that.
You can probably find a used copy for $20 on ebay or something. -

L4D2 will not be good as I guess. Rather than that, get L4D1 or some other games.
-
I dunno if you can buy used copies because it's a Valve / Steam game. I bought into the hype too, not sure what all the fuss is about. It's kinda fun, but it's total chaos. I never could get into it. I think it'd be fun if you were playing with a few of your buddies but other than that I don't care for a 13 year old to be screaming at me what to do.
-
Wait til L4D2 comes out, I would think Steam would have a discount on L4D as well.

Yeah if your lucky enough to get a competent adult based team it can be good fun, or if you had time to dedicate to the game to find a group of friends to play with but for the casual gamer like me that just gets on here and there and rely s on PUG's its not so great.
I had good times though with the game and a few friends when I somehow managed to find time to play 2 or 3 times a week. I am busy with other stuff now so have not even touched my PC for gaming in well over a month. -
Nothing, if you like dirty slimy politics. They basically got people to buy an unfinished game, promising loads of dlc and support and have barely even delivered any of that; instead they turned around and said "just kidding, we ditched support for the game practically moments after it was released and we're now going to charge you the price of a full game for the content we promised you initially"
Of course most inept/casual gamers couldn't care less since a game's a game and they're used to getting the short end of the stick from quick-release profit hungry companies (i.e. EA). However for Valve proponents who have supported the company for years now, its saddening to see them go this route, hence the boycott. -
ouch :/ that hurt me. i am still planning on getting the game and i am far from considering myself an inept gamer. i still believe valve will release more dlc, they are sending one out in september, if there is even only one more ill be happy, thats about an extra half a game, which is far more than most release. the game was short, but it is also very fun and very replayable.
-
not meant as insult, just an explanation why boycotters seem so ardent (if I seem a bit curmudgeon it's because I feel personally slighted when scoffs are made about expressing a legitimate concern) . there's a whole 'nother topic surrounding the details, but to add insult to injury, when quoted earlier Chet (spokesperson/lead for L4D) said there would be no new campaigns in the dlc. after the boycott reached 40k members, suddenly they were singing a different tune. I just think people are too quick to condemn the boycotters before realizing they're actually working to keep Valve honest.

I was one of the people quite shocked when LFD2 was announced, I thought it was way too early, but much more upset when I saw the previews of it.
Its like the same exact game with new levels, worse graphics, and added a bunch of new weapons.
Its not worthy of being a new game IMO and should be a cheap expansion pack. They cant do it as an expansion because it uses a new engine, but they should still be giving people like half off for having LFD1 with some kind of rebate or something because they are essentially making you buy the same game again just to stay current because a lot of people are sure to leave LFD1 just because the new one is out and thus killing its player base and thus the game since its a multiplayer game. -
@ @nthony and ViciousXUSMC:
I'd say wait until it is released before bashing only at previews. As for the complaints, I still don;t understand how greedy can be people expecting more than what offered on the box (a.k.a. the game) and free, above all.
I do understand this movement was quite sudden, yet I cannot condemn them from trying to make bussiness.
Back on topic: $30.00 does not sounds bad. If you can catch it as $20 (and plan to play it online, as it is intended) then you got a super deal. -
i think you should get it. you'll probably appreciate l4d 2 a little more.
-
L4D 2 has worse graphics?

The style is cartoony like TF2, not quite as fitting as the dark original graphics found in the first game. -
Get L4d it's well worth it! Good fun gameplay. Worth the money. Plus if you get it now you will have played the hell out of it by the time L4D 2 and MW 2 come out.
