So the rumor was true about L4D2 coming out with new maps and new weapons.
I thought we were going to get more maps but i guess we are not...for yet![]()

I fell like it's kinda quick. Valve should let Left 4 Dead sit around. That's what Valve does best, making lasting games. I guess if they want to add some more versatility in, and if they added a custom map maker that could be cool.

L4D2?? as an expansion (free like TF2 updates) or a new game you have to buy?
I like L4D online with some friends, but its hard to find a good pick up group game sometimes.
Been supplementing some TF2 in there latley so I dont get burned out.
Im also hearing good things about killing floor. -
Killing floor is what I wanted from L4D except for graphics to be honest...
Im sticking to that game for a while to come -
I don't see them doing it. If anything, it'll be like add-on content, kind of like what Valve did with Counter Strike Source and is doing with TF2.
-
I'm fearing that Valve is inheriting EA Games' tendency to update ALL of their games every year. I mean EA was the retail distributor for L4D, who knows what could happen.. -

It better cost <$24.99 or I'll wait till Valve has one of their "weekend specials" six months later...

Hehe i was hoping someone would post a L4D2 thread http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/47577/Left-4-Dead-2-High-Definition-Trailer-Released
*gasp* Zoey's black!!!! -

wow i dont think we need l4d2. they should just keep adding to l4d.

I don't see the point in Left 4 Dead 2. Why can't they just put my resources into getting Half Life 2 Episode 3 out? Or perhaps even Portal 2 (Portal does need more content)...or at a stretch a new Counter Strike.

Personally, after around 800+ hours of playtime in Left 4 Dead, I came to realize that the game was not so great, and it got boring after the ~400 hours.
Sort of, I always knew that Left 4 Dead was never going to be a "Full Game", but, rather, a Paid Beta / Concept Test that needed actual Player Feedback Data, and that something much, much greater would be built upon that data base.
Left 4 Dead 2 cannot be added as a DLC simply because Left 4 Dead 2 is going to be based on a newer version of the Source Engine, which is incompatible with the older version of the Source Engine that Left 4 Dead has, also, adding the so many new game modes, maps, AI Director 2.0 (Now controls Weather, Map Layout, World Objects Placement, etc...) would be very, very time-consuming, and would require a very, very long period of playtesting, and for example, the AI Director 2.0 would not be compatible with the AI Director 1.0 at all, so, a new game is totally needed.
Left 4 Dead 2 might be a refreshing change, personally, I am looking upon to Left 4 Dead 2, but I think that the people who have already bought Left 4 Dead will be really mad at Valve, bad move, Left 4 Dead 2 should be a DLC, but I think that rather, Valve is going to follow Half-Life 2's "Episodic" Releases, which is a good thing.
I'd buy it. (I heard that actual Left 4 Dead customers will only pay around $20-$25 for Left 4 Dead 2, so stay tuned!) -

How come Asians never survived a zombie apocalypse.....................anyways
The trailer looks great, the way the zombie flesh moves around made it look very realistic, and I like the new source engine renderings. However, I can't help but feel that all four characters feel "out of place"; in terms of Valve's design trend, and for the overall feeling of the game. The new characters may look more like common poeple who see everyday but for some reason they also give out this "movie" actors feel; four beautiful people get to survive the apocalypse while everyone else died.
P.S. the characters also looked more cartoony than the current l4d models. -
-
is that uncle phil?
-
I guess the cartoony look is how the new source engine will be like, ive been waiting for a 1/2 price special for l4d since the last one and now i guess i'll have to wait till november, that sucks.

wow let me say... I really hate the new cast of characters for L4D2, I might quite possibly not get the game just based on that. Esp since often times you never get to choose who to play as.
Liked the cast in L4D, it just seemed to fit and made some sense.
After watching the trailers, all I can think is how bad this game will be.
Do you really expect to just up the graphics and recycle the same enemies, the same sound effects, and the same gameplay and just change the character models and toss out some new stages and call it a game?
People that got bored with the first game are going to get bored of this one 3x faster, as its almost the same game. Im already tired of the zombie sounds in L4D, I cant believe I heard the same ones on the trailer for the 2nd game. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
valve.
don't split the l4d community by releasing l4d2 right after l4d...
the trailer looks like the same game with different levels. why not just release more levels and content for l4d one and support your games?
what crap.
unless there is a sick upgrade deal or something, i just lost a lot of faith in valve. i don't plan on buying this and i wont buy hl2:episode 3 now just to spite them.
if it was legitimately better, different, etc. i would have a different opinion, but the gameplay trailer looks "literally" like the same thing, possibly with worse graphics ala TF2 that don't really mesh well with the zombie apocalypse theme. -
i want hl3, not l4d2!!!

I hope that L4D will feature something very new, not just the same old stuff with new maps and a melee weapon. Also, if it is similar to L4D, it better be cheaper for people who already have L4D.

A single "megathread" that includes info/gameplay videos/screenshots/etc
by the looks of it melee weapons+guns+expert difficulty=VERY bad combo -
Wow, after watching all the gameplay videos, it really does seem like L4D2 is just L4D with better, brighter graphics and a few more weapons. Many sounds + music tracks seem to be recycled from L4D as well as the core gameplay elements.

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
yes. i want everyone who is hyped up for L4D2 to watch the trailer and then tell me to my face that you seriously believe that L4D2 looks like a serious remake of L4D and not an expansion pack. The change of graphics looks marginal at best. More detailed zombies is good, but cartoon graphics ala TF2 are not. Other than that, we have an upgraded AI director, a few more enemies, maps, weapons. The whole point of having an AI director and calling it that instead of just saying "semi-random level enemy and object placement" is that the AI director is a modular entity. I'm not buying into the hype of the upgraded AI director being such a big deal and that merits rebuying the game.
This screams expansion pack. I don't mind expansion packs as long as that is what they are, but if Valve starts acting like EA and franchises out all their crap with yearly re-releases, im going to have a total fit. I seriously don't want to buy games, and then rebuy them to get new maps. Just let me have the maps and pay for them.
Meanwhile, they support TF2 until kingdom come! -
I noticed that too. I don't think cartoon graphics is really suited for a zombie game... -
-
Sounds like it's a full game! That's pretty fast considering the original only came out last year. I would definitely love new weapons, it's pretty basic at the moment. I was devastated when I realised there was no chainsaw or lawnmower...

I saw the trailer and I didn't see anything that was not possible with the first game.... This does not seem like a sequel, it just seems like an expansion pack.
I am fairly angry with this announcement, because I paid full price to a game promised with more campaings, bosses and stuff, and now its basically getting axed for this "new" L4D2.
That's just wrong. I woudn't mind if this was perhaps at most 20dlrs or something, but full price for what seems to be L4D again just in another location.... bleh. -
I just hope there'll be some kind of an uber Steam deal for both L4D and L4D2 when it's released. -
Exactly. (Although I hope Valve know what they're doing).
I think it's time for them to update the Source engine. It would be worrying if they developed HL2E3 on this current Source engine because the graphics are now several years old... and in the gaming industry that's a big problem. -
For everybody whining about how they're releasing L4D2 instead of DLC...they already released the Survival Pack, which was a pretty significant update. A whole new game mode, and the other two campaigns for Versus mode, and a new map for Survival mode. And where did you read anything from Valve that says they're not going to release more content before L4D2 anyway?
Also, Valve is doing an incredibly nice thing by releasing extra content for free in the first place. If this were an EA game, we would have had to pay for the Survival Pack, just like Battlefield 2; several expansions were released, none of which offered anything more than new vehicles, weapons, maps, and armies. And yet EA charged (and still charges) money for each and every one of these expansions. Hell, Valve had to argue with Microsoft to get them to allow the Survival Pack for free on the Xbox 360 version as well, because Microsoft insisted on charging.
I have always been very happy with Valve, as they are one of the increasingly rare developers these days that caters to the needs and desires of PC gamers. I have not been disappointed with literally any game they've ever released since the original Half-Life and its expansions. As a company that makes games, it's their natural right and purpose to do exactly that: make games, and sell them. Anything else is extra, and a favor for us.
I bought Left 4 Dead on its release day last November, and have been enjoying it ever since. You can be sure I'm going to buy Left 4 Dead 2 as soon as it's available this November, even if it's a full-price $50 game, because I have no reason not to. I'm not going to begrudge Valve for releasing a newer game quickly.
I suppose my only misgivings about this are related to the fact that I think the time spent getting L4D2 out the door so fast could instead have been used for Half-Life 2 Episode Three, something I've eagerly been awaiting since my first playthrough of Episode Two when I got the Orange Box.
To spare you all the wall of text I just wrote, I'll sum my thoughts up concisely here: you shouldn't hold it against Valve for releasing L4D2 so soon after the original. It's what game companies do, and I think Valve has spoiled us gamers by going miles above and beyond what other developers do for their communities, to the point that people are now disappointed when a game gets just one DLC pack before a sequel. Look at the bigger picture, guys. I think Valve has done more for all of us than a lot of you seem to give them credit for.
*Just a disclaimer, I do not work for Valve, and I'm not personally affiliated with anyone who does, so don't think I'm gaining anything by typing this all out.
Cheers. -
Absolutely.
Valve took a massive financial hit by releasing the DLC for free on both platforms. They probably had to spend a large amount of money to develop the survival pack in the first place, and they also probably had to pay microsoft to release the DLC for free on Xbox.
Valve are pretty much giving us their hard work for free when it comes to extra content.
(The reason is because Valve is a privately owned company and they are not bound by shareholder returns or profit. They are free to follow their dreams.) -
-
I bet there was so much content in L4D that Valve said " Hey, let's remove half of the stuff and sell it as L4D 2 next year. It's Zombies. The kids will eat this s*** up!".
Now, where's my HL: Episode 3?
-
You guys should listen to the latest 1up podcast where they talk some more about left4dead 2. Such as that valve updated the source engine again and this time the zombies limbs can be shot off and they would still come at you. Also there are tons of new animations for the zombies and with the melee weapons you can only carry and use at the moment, like you cant switch between that to your gun. Once you get hit hard holding an axe, you drop it and have to pick it back up again.
We still do not know the all the features of the game though, but yea im still kind of mad that it this sequel came out so soon. -
Whining about this is sort of like saying, last year, that Spore will be an awesome game.
You just have to wait and see the finished product. -
I really want to see L4D2 to be a "True" survivor horror game especially now you can carry melee weapons. This addition can be a good thing, I really want to see the game with limited ammunition, and that everything should be able to be share between team mates. Just imagine, you are being attacked by a horde of zombies, you ran out of ammo, your team mate throw you his gun to save your life. Now that's what I call team work.
Also, a true survivor style game will have more risk vs reward moments, and it will also be alot more exciting then the L4D now, which is pretty much a gun game, reach ammo, rinse and repeat.
