Which of the following space based action games do you prefer:
(1) Freespace 2 Open
(2) Babylon 5: I've Found Her
(3) Freelancer
(4) Darkstar One
I omitted the "X" series because it is more of an open space drama than an action game.
Edit:
Links for FS2 Open and IFH
Freespace 2 Open:

Please if you download the game, make a backup, and save on bandwidth as these guys are offering free downloads.
Babylon 5 I've Found Her (IFH):

Very straight forward download and instructions.
Both support 16:10 widescreen natively. Just use their launcher program to config and it should show up in their resolution pull down menu.

I definitely recommend FS2, one of the best games I've ever played (still play it once in awhile). If you get it, I strongly recommend FS1 + Silent Threat add-on as it creates the back story for FS2.
I can't personally recommend FS Open, it's the modding/programming community's attempt at a FS3. I've never played it myself so I can't say one way or the other. FS2 retail is great though. -
FS2 Open is actually Freespace 2. There are mods to add more missions, etc, otherwise it is FS2 in its entirety.

Freespace 2

I followed the FS2 open community, and there was talk of creating their version of FS3 (with new missions).
Either way, with some programming knowlege, Visual C++ 6, the Freespace Tools and Source Code (which is freely available), you can do some pretty awesome things with FS2.
I was able after tinkering for awhile, to create true warmup/warm down beam weapons for player ships, and the ability to play capitals. I know the FS Open community went far further than I ever did. -
freespace 2 was fun. never did any modding just played it. can't comment on the others you listed as i did not play them.

Freespace series FTW!
-
I must be the only person on the planet disappointed by Freespace 2.
IMO it's a near-arcade game masquerading as a space-sim. No takeoffs, landings, or even flying to waypoints. You just get dropped in the middle of the action, nothing in the way of branching story / missions---just 2 "volunteer" missions to break up the total linearity, and most of the missions involved escorting/protecting other ships (my least favorite mission type.)
Thought WC 3, 4, Prophecy, etc even Tie Fighter were all much better. -
I'm going to be the one guy who, even though it's not perfect, have really enjoyed Darkstar One. It kinda reminds me of Privateer and Tachyon: The Pulse. Open-ended, but has a fairly good story.
-
Wing Commander series. And if you don't mind the kinda dated graphics (for a currently available game. Take a look at StarShatter.
-
It was event driven, and the story was very linear yes, but a great story it was.
You did fly waypoints however, and the modding community is very open (no pun intended). The game comes with a mission editor that you can create your own detailed ones. Huge capital ship battle fests are the best.

Wing Commander, but I guess from the list Freelancer

Agreed about the editor, there are several good campaigns out there
The large cap-ship fights were awesome.......makes me wish it had more bomber/strike missions. -
I play freelancer but from the good thing a heard a saw about fs2 I might get it too ^^
-
It's an oldie, but a goodie. -
I've always loved Freelancer. I just wish the chances of a sequel weren't abysmally low...

Tie Fighter wins all.
