I'm close to ordering a Lenovo Y510, it has the 8600M GT, should I be overly concerned with it being 'defective'?

How many here have an 8600M GT that is working just fine with regular temps? For a good period of time (more than a year) :)

Upon receiving this notebook, whatdo you recommend besides 3dmark 06 and updating the bios? I'm looking for one to measure temps.

Dell Inspiron 1720 - 8600M GT. 1 year of usage. Highest temp recorded, while overclocked by 25% and stress tested for 6 hours, 68*C. Idles at 45*C. Has never gone above 70*C. So far, it isn't listed as Dell's list of notebooks with defective Nvidia cards - yet. The design of the card is rather proprietary though. It can be removed.

3DMark06 is a benchmarking tool; to measure your temps you can try HWmonitor and GPUz. HWM is really good for measuring from start to finish - lowest and highest temps is recorded. GPUz gives detailed information about your 8600M GT.

You erm, got temperature concerns? :D

No, I don't own the notebook yet, but apparently the 'defectiveness' of the 8600M GT causes 100 degree Celsius temps according to 'the inqurier' and some rather annoying threads I've read condemning the 8600M GT and Nvidia...

Surely, all these notebooks don't have defective gpu's:

There will be an update of the Y510 very soon, and it will have a GT 130M, 2 generations newer than the 8600M GT.

    I suggest you wait.

How soon? Where did you hear/read this? Will it be montevina?

The one I'm looking at is a clearance/budget item for $600...

Will it still cost around $600 with the new 130M GT ?

You should NOT be worried about it, but I STRONGLY suggest you wait for a 9600 or higher card :)
    JUST in case...

I can't save my money, I'm a college student deep in debt, I just want a dedicated graphics card. I have a desktop at my home (20+ hours away which i obviously can't touch for months).

The 8600M GT is perfect, it's an upgrade over the X1300 in my laptop now, and $600? Done Deal. :)

    Most integrated laptops are $>600

How does it compare to the Nvidia 9800 GTX+ or ATI 4850 I plan on putting in my desktop? Not good I suppose.

I think the $600 8600M GT is a really good deal.

128bit graphic card +-20% doesn't mean much to me... it's just framerate, not visual quality and fidelity.

im gonna get you ben....YOU JUST WAIT! :)

Prof, if i were you i would just go to the Lenovo Outlet and get something there you can get a notebook with a decent GPU/lower end Quadro notebook(which overlocks out the wazoo) for the same price.

Also a heads up i think thats a typo i believe the Y510 has a 8600 GS only i remember thats what it had not so long ago....

No, the Y510 has a 8600m GT, not GS. I bought mine several months ago for $880 so $600 is a good deal. I wish I had waited however. It's a bit big and bulky and only gets 2 1/2 to 3 hours of battery life, and thats with wifi off, and the screen brightness less than 30%. The screen looks a bit washed out as well. Overall, it performs very well. If battery life is not to much of a concern, and you don't mind the screen, then go for it. :)

Oh man I'd stay away from the 8600 if you can. I don't think they really dialed down the problem and fixed it. The last thing I heard is that they made new drivers in which would increase your fan speed. Not much of a fix really. So to be sure and safe, I personally wouldn't get it. I almost got a laptop with the 8600 but then I thankfully remembered about the issues that series of GPUs was having. I'm sure the 8600 could last you an ok amount of time depending on how much you stress the gpu. Over all , I wouldn't chance it.

I highly recommend you to try and to save up as much as you can. Even though you said you can't afford to, I would try my best. In the long run you would benefit much more for that extra money you saved.

    I can't wait therefore I have a new plan.

Use the 8600M GT, and if I start to notice problems make the company honor their warranty... I seriously don't think it will be a problem, and that $616 to be exact is hard to pass up because that deal is going.

I also don't know why I should wait, I'm having a 9800 GTX+ waiting for me after the semester :p

again, if 130M GT & Montevina is what you guys want me to pay $300+ for in the re-release, I'll pass.

    thanks for the discussion :)

For 600$ i think is a great deal... I have had my 8600's for over a year and even when in SLI they are always hotter than 1 alone, they are working great, no issues so far (knock on wood)...
