Hello all! I purchased a Lenovo Y50 a month ago. Fantastic Laptop really, it's just the display that's crappy. Anyways, I've noticed that the Metro 2033 and Metro last light play well on my laptop well without any frame drops or inconsistencies for around an hour. Afterwards, There will be a frame skip every five seconds. The thing is that most frame skips occur right before a character speaks or some event is going to happen.Sometimes, I even get crashes to the desktop. I've already ruled out heat as an issue. I then loaded up bfbc2 just to make sure, and no frame rate issues there. Afterwards, I tried fallout 3. Again, plays well for around an hour before skipping like a stone. I haven't tried limiting FPS in Nvidia inspector yet, but the usual culprits are off. No Vsync in application, No physx in application, etc. It almost sounds like a hard drive problem tbh.

Have you monitored temps to see if maybe GPU throttling?

Temps are stable, but from what I've gathered the 860m in the Y50 doesn't throttle until around 80 C plus. Even then, it only drops to around 1020 core.

What drivers are you using? Official nVidia drivers or one with modded inf file?

One with modded inf. You think that would cause the problem? I might try the new beta drivers.

It could be just trying to eliminate what it might be. Try installing factory drivers and see if it does the same thing.

NVIDIA are screwing around too much with the recent drivers.. I don't know what they're playing at but it looks like what Apple does with each iOS update which makes the phone slower and not faster...

Tried both factory drivers and 340 beta. Ain't working. Still the same smooth first hour of game play and then a frame skip/stutter every 5 seconds in metro/fallout. So I'm on 340 beta right now, if anyone has any other suggestions.

seems like an overheating issue to me but hey, could be the CPU temperature as well. Have you checked that?

I wouldn't think it's the 860m overheating and causing stuttering, as soon as I switch to another game like bfbc2 from metro the frames are high like they should be. The CPU is near 74-81 when playing metro and lower when playing fallout. But I'm not real time monitoring, I'm just switching applications fast and looking at temps. Are there any programs that people can recommend to show real time temps?

Alright, it was some random stupid background process. I downloaded Razer Game booster. Running Metro Last light 1080P at around 80-140 FPS High settings, low motion blur, no AA, no PhysX, 4XAF. Stuttering has stopped.

Yeah, Last Light ran better than 2033, but it never ran that well.

I'm using razers built in fps counter for those numbers. Does seem a bit weird. I played some dlc today and was on the surface. Although the counter said 70+, it didn't feel like it. I'll use fraps tomorrow and report back.

ChowMeow, what are your boost clocks on under 80°C?
The user 'alaskajoel' reported the same on his Y50 with minimal throttling to 1020mhz when hitting above 80°C...

I'm curious if this could be avoided, as 81°C are far away from a critical temperature...?
Or is maxwell a bit more sensitive to temps than kepler as i did'nt see kepler cards already slightly dropping clocks on 80s...?

Yup...razers gameboost fps counter is whack in metro. Fraps showed 50-120 fps on medium 1080p.

Sort of curious as to what process was running in the background that would cause your problem?

For monitoring I always use MSI afterburner, and HWmonitor. While razer does have good products sometimes, I am not confident enough to bother with their programs haha.

Reviving this thread because I am currently having issues with Metro Last Light and my Lenovo y50. Game performance drops 5-10 seconds after getting into the game (past menu screen) to ~15 fps and locks there. Resolution won't change even with menu option toggles (1366x768 is still running at 1080p in the game, steam overlay shows up at 1366x768 though). It seems like the game is dropping back to the Intel graphics driver, but I have no idea why. I've uninstalled all the extra crap that came on the laptop, I have no startup apps beyond Windows system operations, and I have the nvidia graphics driver set to take over and run at max performance.

Also, MSI afterburner hitches rhythmically. Every other second when graphing out the temps, etc. it freezes up for an instant. It does not do this on my desktop PC.

Anyone else experiencing this with their Y50?

Metro seems to be performing well now (resolution still won't change) with the latest 340.43 beta drivers, but now atm Batman AO is crashing on startup. I am starting to dislike Nvidia Optimus....

Reverted back to the 332 drivers, and everything works. Kind of annoying...

it's probably just nvidia drivers, it's not really any news that they screwed up hard. c'mon guys this is just stuttering, the 880m guys are crying rivers because of throttling
