is the apple Macbook pro the lightest 15.4 inch computer with a dedicated video card? (price doesnt matter, i jw.)
-
-
I doubt it, but definitely the thinnest.
-
Yes, but a better option is the HP8510p it is about 1/2lbs heavier but much better built.
-
-
the wieght flucuation will be no more than a pound with these sized laptops, I really dont think it matters too much what one you go with, cause you will not be able to notice the weight difference

the macbook pro has a unique aluminum build, and its probably the thinnest (or one of) in 15" laptop world.
aluminum has some advantages and disadvantages, but if you're into aluminum, the mbp is a great choice. -
Just remember the macbook pro is also probably the hottest 15 inch due to its fanless design. Don't expect to be using it on your lap if thats the reason for getting a light laptop.
-
I believe is the lightest.
-
is it the lightest 15.4 inch overall? i dont happen to see anything lighter than it anywhere.
-
The MBP is indeed currently the lightest 15.4" laptop with a dedicated GPU, but as others have said it is quite expensive and runs fairly hot.
Runners-up are the Dell XPS 1530 and the HP 8510p/w. The MBP, Dell and 8510w all come with the 8600m GT GDDR3 or equivalent, and the 8510p has the Radeon HD 2600 GDDR3, which more or less keeps up with the 8600m GT (within 10%).
edit: regarding actual weights, I think the MBP is 5.4 or 5.5 lbs, the Dell around 6.0 and the HP 6.1. Don't quote me on that though -
Yeah I wouldn't consider these fans here part of a "fanless design". Not sure where you got that idea from. There are two fans, one in each back corner. Air is pulled through the keyboard and pushed out below the screen. The laptop feels much hotter because the case is made of aluminum...which essentially turns the entire thing into a giant heat sink. Not really a good idea to game with this on your lap unless you are a woman or a man who doesn't mind going sterile.
This laptop is about the best size/weight you are going to get with an 8600m GT. If you are willing to go down to an 8400m then you might be able to go smaller. I really like this laptop, it is VERY powerful for its dimensions...but boy does Apple make you pay for it! -

thank you for spreading around garbage.
yes, aluminum is metal and therefore conducts heat. the giant heatsink helps draw heat away from the components - which helps them to be able to slim everything down. the only bad part is that you won't want it on your lap when you are doing heavy work. but on the desk its a good thing imo. i appreciate the fact that my whole case is working towards the well being of the system. -
Oh I don't think it's that hot. I'm able to play COD4 with my GPU overclocked at 600/900 with it on my lap, while my legs are spread apart.

you can run it on your lap, especially with jeans, sure.
but like, if its touching your bare skin, thats a no. -
everything mac is waaayy too pricey because people want to buy their things because their ads make everything a fashion statement (and ppl want 2 b cool lolz). such a waste.
-
Well, its an odd situation with the macbook pro. Here's the two scenarios which u might use a lappy for:
1. Gaming. For which you need to buy XP or Vista and cough up even more money (not satisfied with only paying for Job's cars/houses but also paying for Bill gate's eh?) Not to mention all that heat from the minimalist fan/aluminium frame design
2. Web browsing/office/etc. In which case you don't really need a dedicated card.
I would personally recommend an asus or a dell. At least the XPS 1530 looks likes a gaming laptop not something your mom uses (mine does) -
go get the xps m1530!!!

my laptop is custom built but its pretty light 2.5kg (sorry am UK not knowing much about lb's) but it does get pretty hot - about 78 degrees whilst heavy gaming

hey how much are those new HP elite's supposed to weigh? (i kno the dv5 series will be in about 5.8 lbs.)
-

It really isn't about the heat, but the future of the human race. -
yea, gaming should be done on a desk. the heat from a laptops is crazy.
-
also, does any1 know about any 15.4 inch, or even 16 inch laptops coming out (this summer/montevina.) that weigh less than the 5.4lb Macbook Pro?
-
I doubt 16" will be lighter than 5.4lb.
If gaming is the priority, get the Qosmio F50 with the 9700m GTS in july.
If its price and value for money is the priority, the XPS m1530 is the laptop to get with the summer deals.
If weight is the absolute priority, get the Macbook Pro and install vista/xp on it (for gaming if u ever do) -
bump, but:
windows Xp or vista for the Boot Camp.
Xp would take up less space and be faster. the only real reason for vista would be for dx10. would you even use the DX 10 features on a macbook pro with a 8600m GT? (or the 9600m gt, or the ATI 3450 or 3650 cards that apple might put in there for montevina refresh.) jw. thanks. -
Well, you could always just get XP now and wait and see for Windows 7. Not too many games are going to be DX10 only any time soon (besides those made by microsoft *cough*halo*cough*)
But to be quite honest, the very slight performance hit on Vista is really not that bad as long as you have enough ram. -

MacBook PRO have better cooling system than my year old Aspire 5920G. When i play COD4 MBP GPU temp stay around 75C-80C ,but Aspire hit 85C-90C
MBP have two FANS .They are silent than my Aspire & Dads HP DV2745 -
-
which computers have LED's as well? i know the Macbook Pro does, and the Lenovo's will. what about HP? (dell even has some LED displays too.)
-
The m1530 does, in the 1440x900 res.
-
yea, but buying a dell again is not on my to-do list.
