Well, he's right. Nvidia doesn't give a damn when it comes to open-source. They prefer proprietary stuff and don't bother to help you getting proper Linux support for the hardware you bought.
Not that AMD is perfect when it comes to this, but at least the published quite a bit of documentation and try to help the open-source driver developers.

Interestingly nvidia usually had more drivers for linux and better ones. Optimus just sent it all to hell

I'm sure Nvidia is worried about the 1.41% of the users who use Linux.

Never used Linux before in my life, but if it resulted in better performance for games I'd happily install a partition. Unfortunately, I'm not even aware of any games that run on Linux.

Linux is heaven in terms of total control, I guess anyone who starts it falls in love with it, but until we have about 10% (kinda impossible?) noone will pay us attention :)

True. It kinda goes like this:
Mac: Chihuahua - easiest to tame - Cutest, everyone loves it - does the least/no amount of work
Windows: German Shepherd - not as easy to control - Likable dog for most - moderate but limited functionality
Linux: Wolf - Only the elites can tame - Not very aesthetically appealing or lovable - infinite functionality/power

What kind of apps do you run on it?

I certainly have no brand loyalty toward Windows or OSX, but unless there are video editing, motion graphics, illustration or image editing apps along the lines of Adobe Creative Suite, or popular games available for Linux, that's probably 99% of what I use my laptop for, along with for web browsing, watching Netflix, checking email, etc., and Google Chrome already seems to work just fine with Windows7.

Linux was never meant for gaming. It's a platform for development, creativity and exploration. Just about everything you've mentioned can be done by the enormous plethora of third party open source and free software available for it.

I'm sorry you're incapable of understanding it. Coffee?

far from accurate, a unix based system that uses something of BeOS

I would actually grade it on par with linux, and windows as a close 2nd.

You know you can choose whichever graphical user interface for linux, or design your own. Thus not a problem for ''hardcore'' users. And sincerely I still prefer the looks of the new KDE or gnome over all the other above. Being the windows 8 a good gui, if not one of the more interesting I have seen so far, the integration to the new launch interface is one of the cleaner that there is, customization options should be made for a more enjoyable experience.

GUI is all about easy to use, be it something completely new or something old, tired and tried.

I remember when I learned to use win 95, and how awful I found it compared to win 3.11.

Well I wasn't talking about GUI alone, was I? It would be the least of your concerns when you actually begin to use Unix/Linux on a long term basis...

Actually, Linux on the desktop is perhaps the smallest OS community around. Why would Nvidia spend too much time on it considering that?

I like Linux as much as the next guy. (Oh look, the next guy happens to be a fan of using the right tool for the job. No OS loyalty. Go figure). But let's keep it real so expectations are kept realistic.

Likely Nvidia will get something out months from now. Linux certainly isn't a priority of thier's since they don't derive much revenue if at all from it. They are after all a for profit company with shareholders to answer to.

So why does AMD devote time to it? Good question. Obviously has capitalist motivation behind it considering AMD/ATI was in the dumps just a few years ago.

    neither did I.

And I should know Im a linux users for a few years. Aside that, this is one of the major complaints that I have with the community, they are so so knowledgeable, that they usually dont care about usability. The amount of self importance is another matter.

I have a few coders that i like, and all of them are humble. One is actually a post math PHD, still humble as it gets.

While I credit (and thank) Torvalds for creating the linux kernel, to be honest I feel he is largely irrelevant to linux these days. I don't listen to Torvalds or Shuttleworth any more, I think the community would do just fine without both.

Too bad you don't care about the majority of the servers that host your comments. ;)

Irrelevant except for that small job of writing kernel code, reviewing patches, and merging every development branch into one tree every few weeks. :p

Hopefully AMD and Nvidia will step up their game when Valve releases Steam for Linux. :D
Think they hinted at a late 2012 release on it but with Valve time its anyones guess.
