I know the OP's post is very old, so this doesn't necessarily apply to him any more... But, games like WoW can be free in a way. I have purchased countless of 60day game cards in game from random players with WoW gold. Of course, you have to know how to make easy gold, or else it may not be worth it to you.. Also, GMs have told me it is acceptable, because I am buying the code from another player, and not the physical card.

Great if you like it, just don't pretend it does things better than other free mmos or wow, when many independent sources have proved otherwise. -

IMO WoW's so loved is due to its community. The WoW community is huge, extremely friendly, and eager to help (yea exceptions but for the most part they're nice people). Noobs in WoW aren't alienated (aka "stfu noob gtfo learn 2 play lololz i are haxor), which usually happens in free MMOs. Having a community usually makes any MMO better than it actually is. I've played a good amount of free MMOs, and the majority of them suck due to the crappy community and its arrogant high level players, which makes me leave before even hitting level 20 or 30. Now however, I'm playing a game called Atlantica, and I'm in a guild with many helpful high level players, taking time out of their questing and such to help me obtain nice equipment, and teach me crafting. Good communities make the MMO, a bad community ruins any.

most of those review are the game is boring you can only grind. that is FALSE. If you believe that those reviews are correct then you are entirely incorrect with your views on Archlord. I've played archlord a little longer than you. each time i've played it is always cool. And I'm not pretending anything. I have other games like crysis, cod4, and fallout 3 to play on pc. If this game was so bad do you think i'd waste my time playing Archlord if it was so bad? no. I think that sums it up for all you archlord haters out there.
-
A review isn't a fact, it's an opinion(i.e. that of the reviewer). You yourself have your own opinion made from playing the game. Depending on where you're coming from, opinions can change.
For example, the term "only grind" can spawn differently depending on what you compare it to. Some people aren't used to any grind at all while others are used to grinding levels/gear from RPGs or other MMOs in which case the grind of Archlord(I'll assume there is to a certain level right? All MMOs have grind in one way or another) wouldn't seem bad at all.
Really, the best way is to simply try out the game. Archlord is now free right? So just DL the client and try it out for those who've never tried. Honestly, the best review is *my* review, not anyone else's. -
Guild Wars is another game that I feel pretty much sucks, but do I expect to change the minds of all the Guild Wars fanboys out there? no. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the games they love/hate...but you don't need to be so overly zealous about it. -
While I play EVE Online and think it's the greatest MMO currently in existence about 95% of MMO players do not share that same thought. It's all subjective. Nor do I try to force people into playing it. They can decide for themselves whether a game is for them or not.
-
That is a fact, and a weight of opinion over luna. -
So you are saying my opinion is a lie? Most others are biased in their opinion. my opinion is not biased. most of the other review are lies. especially the ones that say archlord is just grinding. that is not true.
-
For example, let's say I review notebook coolers (which I do). I state facts about the cooler, such as dimensions, capability, and features. I then form an opinion on the cooler, based on what people want in a new cooler or who the targeted audience is for that notebook cooler.
It's important to remember that the success of any great review is being able to walk the thin line between honesty and bias. But the bottom line is that a review should never be used as an excuse to "pull the trigger". It should be used as a resource to facilitate making an educated decision. -
@luna: No of course nobody is saying your opinion is a lie. An opinion is an opinion. Yours is as valid as theirs. However, you have to let people decide for themselves. Sure, some reviews say Archlord sucks, but those are nothing but reviews. I've liked plenty of movies which got really bad reviews before so it's not like reviews are anything set in stone. I understand that if you like a game that you'll want t defend it from all the bad praise it's getting, but to an extent, the bad praise is the reviewer's opinion on certain things.
@garetjax: Of course I understand that, but the reviewer is the one who draws the line at the end of the day so it is in a sense an opinion based on something factual.
Let's take Archlord for example... Say the review says "there's a lot of grind". Well who defines "a lot" and by what standard? Most of the time there will be little numerical facts other than perhaps a given timeframe for grind. But once again, to what scale or reference do we quantify "a lot"? The reviewer is the one who draws this distinction based on past experiences with other games; this very experience changes with every person(depending on what games they're used to playing).
I do agree with you that reviews are only tools to be used to make an educated decision and by no means are they definite in any way, even more so on something as sketchy as self entertainment(just because someone else doesn't like it doesn't mean you won't). -

First off I'm not trying to change anyone's views on Archlord. Second I'm not a fanboy. Third this isn't about archlord's review it is about Galdere saying that my opinion is a lie, and that is review is the fact just cause the majority supports him. I just can't stand him. He thinks just because more people don't like Archlord means he can say whatever he likes and that it is valid, and that just pricks me in the side. Archlord is the best replacement to WOW for free, and if yall can't see you guys are missing out an awesome game.
.
Galdere:"The many reviews and people in this forum that have played it don't lie. Those are the facts. Great if you like it, just don't pretend it does things better than other free mmos or wow." -
Luna, don't get offended by the comment, but I think you're getting a bit worked up. Archlord being better, worse, good,. bad or whatever you want is based on your opinion as a player of the game. Therefore, you affirming it is the best replacement to WoW for free is as much an opinion as anyone else's.
Galdere is saying that he as well as multiple reviews think that Archlord isn't that great.
If you think it's wrong, then sure, you can say you enjoy it, but both are valuable opinions depending on where you're coming from. -
he is not only saying that but he is trying to say that i'm a liar. that is not true. sure there are tons of reviews supporting him. but if everyone playing archlord wrote a review then you would see quite a difference. the only reson i addedg the last sentence was to do what insanechinaman said: "Stop being a stubborn fanboy, your arguments aren't changing the views of anyone else here. If the other members don't like it, just be like, "Well you're missing out on a good game, your loss." Stop repeating the same thing about how Archlord is not a grindfest. If everything else about it was so great, it wouldn't have received such low scores. However, if you feel that it's a great game, then two lucky pennies for you. Just stop berating all the other members for not liking Archlord." so no i'm not getting worked up i was just trying to end this argument.
-
Well I don't see where he called you a liar... You're the one who said that actually. He merely said that your opinion did not match the majority of reviews out. Sure, obviously not everyone's opinion was taken, but of those which were, a majority of them didn't like Archlord. Does that make it a bad game? Heck no! That's like saying me failing my math exam at school makes me a bad person... -_-'
As everyone(including you) said, if you feel it's good, then just say so(which you have). No need to contest everyone on it. If they're smart people, they'll try the game out themselves and find out.
To stick to the original topic... The OP asked for what we each thought was the best free alternative MMO to WoW. You stated it was Archlord; now just let the OP try it. -
ok. ill let him try it. here is where he basically said i was lying:
