Looking for some advice on a possible purchase of a Sager NP8150. I do have some questions regarding it's capabilities and whether I should I go ahead with a purchase now rather then later.

So first off, what graphical setting will I be using for most games with a 6990m? Will I be maxing games out (excluding Crysis and Metro) with FPS of <30 or will I be able to play 1080p with just high settings? The big game I'm planning on playing is BF3 with this laptop. Now if it's close to what BC2 requires, will the 6990m do?

Secondly, I'm planning on getting this laptop for college as well (which is why I'm planning on a laptop rather than a desktop. However, I won't be in college until Fall 2012. Personally do you think I'm better off waiting 1/2 a year?

I used to play BF2 on my desktop so I must say BF3 I really want to play the PC version over the console version for the 64 players :D

    Also couple more questions:
Does the matte screen over the stock Sager screen really worth the extra $100? The i7-2630QM processor will get the job done well right? Is there a decent performance between 8GB 1600MHz vs 1333 MHz?

    Thanks.

IMO your best option would be to build a $500ish desktop for BF3, even with a monitor it will be just as fast(or faster) than a $1500+ laptop...

I'm looking for something I can do school work and gaming on. I don't necessarily have the room for a desktop. This is my desktop replacement.

    $500-600 PC + $500-800 Laptop = $1000 - 1500. In that case I would be saving on a few hundred at most.

why is everyones advice to buy a desktop? can you close a desktop and move it easily? what makes you people think that owning a desktop hasnt crossed everyones mind and that a laptop better suits their needs?

    to answer his question.

wait half a year and something better will be out, if you can wait that long that is. As their isnt very many good games coming out besides elder scrolls and bf3. id wait till 2012 personally. the 6990m will only last about a year at decent settings.

I live out of a 12x10ft room, I have plenty of room for a desktop. "not having space" is not a valid excuse for not wanting a desktop...

90% of the time your going to want an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse anyway, a mATX PC can be about the size of 2-3 textbooks and will take up LESS space than large 17in laptop+power brick+external monitor...

I can tell you that the 6990 will be able to play most on max settings without a hitch. I'm on the 485m version on the NP8150 and I can play Metro in about 20-30 FPS give or take. The definite answer is that, yes it will probably play BF3 very well, but maybe not the highest settings possible (minus a couple of AAs )

The matte is VERY MUCH WORTH IT. I have a review for the NP8150 in my sig (although it's the GTX 485m instead), and just going to paste a picture I took when watching a movie. Angles are very decent, colour contrast very sharp, crisp and I have gotten many praise regarding the screen.

And for your final question, no there isn't really a boost in performance in regards to the 1600MHz and 1333MHz...but if you have spare change then no one's going to stop you :). The 2630QM can do very well, so don't worry about it. :D

I completely agree! You can even put your psu, cpu, mobo and videocard into a nice cardboard box so they don't just lay on the floor with that budget.

Wait... why is the bios beeping?

Thisialamp: Wow that's a nice screen. I assume that is the matte version as well. Thanks for all the answers (exactly the info I needed).

Also can you explain to me why on the xoticpc it says that the NVIDIA GTX 485M and 580M are "User Upgradable" but the Radeon 6990m isn't?

Hmm...well I'm pretty sure it's upgradable. Best to email them to confirm so; they reply quick :).

Here's Xoticpc's answer on if the 6990m is upgradable if others are wondering.

The HD 6990M is also user upgradeable, but right now there are no cards better than it right now. The other Nvidia cards are selected upgrades, and can be upgraded by the customer.

If a new ATI card comes out, you would more than likely be able to upgrade depending on Sager’s ability to make it compatible with your machine.

Yeah pretty excited now. By the way, is the main difference between all the CPUs just the clock speed?

There will always be something better out the next year. Thats just how technology is. And lol "the 6990m will only last about a year at decent settings." Do you even know what your talking about? It will max games out for atleast 2-3 years and then maybe in the 4-5 year it will have to tone it down to med/high.

To the OP, please just post in the Sager forums, I got mine because of this section. Everyone there has the actual machine (or another similar Sager) and knows it inside and out.
