So I'll be in Europe for a month without internet and I'm looking to buy a PC game that will last for the entire duration. So, single player only and the game has to be totally awesome without accessing the internet.
My PC specs are
Inspiron 1520
T7250 2.0 GHz
3 GB RAM
8400M GS
I'm generally looking for a RTS game because those usually allow a lot of replay value. Not really looking at FPS because without internet...well that just wouldn't work.
-
empire total war or any previous total war series
-
COD4, altho nothing mega long has an awesome campaign
BIOSHOCK - Thats a single player to remember
Will think of some more dont you worry lol hehe.
The majority of good RTS can be consuming. -
i'll look into the empire total war series. i'll also look into bioshock
-
Fallout 3, Bioshock
-
If you need it to last a month, I'd stay away from Bioshock, as it's a quick play with next to no replay value, at least in my opinion. If you want an FPS, maybe Mass Effect, because the campaign is roughly 15 hours with all the side missions, and there's tons of replayability due to all the different ways to go through the campaign.
If you want an RTS, which I think you hinted at, maybe look into Sins of Solar Empire with the Entrenchment micro-expansion. My first game versus one AI on a small map (20 planets) took 8 hours to complete. On the other hand, a huge map (120 planets, 5 star systems) took me nearly a week or so with very hard AI. The Entrenchment micro-expansion vastly improves gameplay, as well as graphics and effects, and adds several new units on top of the large selection in the original game, the coolest thing by far being the starbases. Overall, I think it's one of the best RTSs out there.
Seeing as you're not going to have internet, maybe shy from Empire: Total War, due to the fact that updates are being released constantly in the effort to improve stability. If you like the gameplay of the Total War series, I'd look at Rome: Total War, and download some of the mods for it. Besides, the Romans are much cooler than anyone during the Napoleonic era. -
lol bioshock for an entire month? are you kidding?, yeah definitely look over for total war series, the grand campaign takes a loooooooooooooooong time to beat (at least for me)
-
Hmm, with those specs I'd say most modern RTS' are out of the question. You could always go with a slightly older RTS, like the Dawn of War series, good old WarCraft 3, or even a much older game like total annihilation (hey, it's still fun). If you go with a total war game, get one of the older ones. The modern ones require too much power. I know you said no FPS', but to me UT3 is pretty fun, even offline, and the unreal engine runs surprisingly well even on weaker systems.
-
Panda, Sins of Solar Empire sounds awesome. But I wonder if it'll work well with my current system. As JWest brought up, unfortunately most modern RTS' are out of my reach. I was also looking at Company of Heroes, but I wonder also if it'll work well with my laptop. I'll do some system requirements tests right now and report back.
-
Company of Heroes should run fine on your laptop I suppose. It's a great game~
-
fallout 3 or oblivion can easily last a month
-
I second all of these:
Company of Heroes
Sins of a Solar Empire
Fallout 3
Oblivion
Mass Effect -
Download the original Far Cry for free (ad supported) before you go... I love that game.
-
I know you mentioned RTS because of it's replay value but I would suggest Civ IV although it's TBS but it has tons of replay value. They just released Civ IV complete for $39.99
If you decide to buy Civ IV, good luck getting anything done as you'll be saying "just one more turn" over and over. -
I would highly recommend Bioshock, but that would likely not last a month.
The Warcraft 3 Battlechest can be had for $10.00 in many locations, and offers great replay value and a very good campaign that would last you quite a while. -
On all the lowest settings, I think you should be able to run Sins of a Solar Empire.
-
-
Y'know I was thinking about this post....
There's already been many terrific suggestions for PC games to consider. I will also give a nod to Sins of a Solar Empire to give a whirl. Just ensure it is completely updated before you go offline.
Here's where the obligatory " BUT" goes:
But, for one month in Europe I can think of much better things to be doing than playing video games. -
-
RTS for one month?? I can suggest Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. The replay value comes from playing with the 7 different races.
-
I have played all manner of rts but Sins didnt work for me. It didnt help that I couldnt figure out how to get throught the first 5 minutes. Played a lot of space stuff too.... At any rate I would second (or third?) Rome total war. The big campaign takes some time even if you auto battle and it isnt too taxing being an older game.
-
Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms with the Third Age (lord of the rings) mod. Amazing work.
-
You definitely ought to give Sins another chance, that game is fantastic. Just do the tutorial, play some smaller games, and take the time to learn the ropes. It really is a great game.
-
bud, look at the civilization 4 series
Diablo? -

Titan Quest. That game was addictive. I need to get back to it sometime.

Knights of the Old Republic.

I'll be the odd one out and say Phantasy Star Universe, its a traditional j-rpg that has a nice long and good 1 player mode.
Also since you say you like RTS, if you dont have it Warcraft III should hold you over. -
Galactic Civilizations 2 if you're willing to try a TBS (turn based strategy).
-
You should look towards the older RTS games such as BattleZone 2, Tiberian Sun + Total War Mod, Red Alert 2 + Yuris Revenge + DeeZires Mods. You can buy all of these dirt cheap and not break the bank. Tiberian Wars will also run at decent settings. Old games FTW!
-
Homeworld.
It's older, so it'll run great even maxed out, and it's got a long, epic campaign. It even still LOOKS good. -
Any game can last a month...if youre really that bored...But then again, youll be in Europe. It can get really boring in some parts. Id recommend going out any chance you get, however. Unless of course, you have already been there, which I am assuming.

Here's a really good adventure game: "Exploring Europe." It's super expensive and you only get a chance to play it a few times in your life, so enjoy it.
-
Thanks for all the great game suggestions. I think I'll pick up Company of Heroes and Sins before I leave.
*Btw, I've been to Europe more times than I can count. Believe me, it gets boring some times :/ -
As far as Europe, I hear you. I've been there a number of times as well, and if I were going, I'd do the same thing as you. I've been to many areas of France, Germany, UK, Luxembourg, Austria, and Amsterdam. I hate traveling now. -
Yeah, its surprising how fast travelling loses its luster.

Get the Medal of Honor 10th Anniversary pack. I know, it's FPS, but it's really all about the campaigns. Multiplayer is just a little bonus feature that I don't really use anyway.
The pack includes the original Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, the Breakthrough and Spearhead expansions for Allied Assault, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, and Medal of Honor: Airborne. Between all of these, the single player campaigns should keep you busy for the whole month. In fact, I'll be surprised if you finish every campaign of every one of these games.
And did I mention the whole pack is just $20?
Also, try Unreal Gold and Unreal II: The Awakening. Once again, FPS, but all about singleplayer. Two of the best sci-fi shooters out there in my opinion. The multiplayer portion, the Unreal Tournament series, are completely separate games. -

Im playing Fallout 3 right now. Pretty fun for an offline game ;x
-
The Last Remnant, anyone? But I do know that JRPG isn't exactly the genre for PC gamers, might be wrong though.
-
hmmm... seeing your notebook specs, whatever game you choose, I would suggest to keep an eye on the GPU (8400 GS) temeperature ....
If you want to try a different path than the shooters, try Prince of Persia: Sands of Time which is a nice third person action-adventure genre game. I am in Europe and have thoroughly enjoyed it, of course on an 8400 GS (HP) running at 94 Deg C! -
-
Rise of nations gold edition.
Low specs, addictive and nice GFX
I only got original cuz they dont sell the expansion seperately anymore but im guessing gold edition will be more addictive than mine which is addicting lol -
Bioshock is very nice, Fallout 3, Farcry 2. Call of duty has to small campaing to keep you busy for a month.

Looking for a great PC game (offline only)
