Hey im looking for a new rpg to play that has an engaging story, good graphics, gameplay and will keep me entertained for about a week. Im 3 weeks from starting university but all my mates start one week before me so i will be sitting at home with nothing to do for one week :( So yeh am hopping someone can suggest a good rpg to me. Please dont suggest Oblivion because i found it horrible lol :/ Ive taken The Witcher and Gothic 3 into consideration so could anyone tell me if these are a good choice of rpgs or if there are better ones.

    Thanks!

If you haven't tried yet, there's Knights of the Old Republic I & II. They're old, but new if you haven't played them yet. Other than those two, I can't think of any I'd recommend esp. since I stick to the sci-fi genre. Oh, there's also Space Siege if you care to take a jump in the dark; I haven't played it and it got mediocre reviews.

Any word on why no Pokemon?

Otherwise, Monster Hunterand Crisis Core are both good.

    RPG =/= 1 week

Space Siege, technically not a true RPG, may indeed fit your criteria. But I'll warn you....it's booooooorrrrrrrring. Since The Witcher is on your radar then I'll vouch for that one. But it'll take more than a measly week to play it through. Load screens alone will eat days away. If you do get The Witcher then keep an eye out for the Enhanced Edition.

Fable may be what you're looking for if you were turned off by Oblivion's open ended gameplay.

I have played Fable and absolutely loved it! Other than Sudeki it is probably the best rpg i have every played! Yes i dont like open ended rpgs simply because i have to do everything in a game like look at every detail, dungeon, chest, over every hill and under ever crevice. I know thats a bad excuse but its annoying in a massive rpg like oblivion. So thats why rpgs which have a set path are better :)

The Witcher Enhanced Edition will be out in erm... approximately 18 minutes. if you have a 8600 GT or better, i would highly recommend it cuz it's cheaper than the original witcher and you also get a bunch of accessories.

Oblivion is a good one too, but it will take more than one week unless you just want to finish the main storyline.

    Others are
Knights of the Old Republic series.
    Mass Effect
and i forgot the last one

The lucky gamers get the Witcher enhanced on the 16th of September, everyone else will see it around the 19th.

Owners of the original only need to download the necessary patch to get their own copy up to scratch with the tweaks. The only thing we miss out on are the boxed accessories.

I'd say The Witcher Enhanced (out today in the US I believe) is your best choice. For $40 not only do you get IMO one of the best RPGs of all time, but it comes with a strategy guide, map, "making of" DVD, soundtrack, and a short story from the series the game is based on.

It took me about 60 hours to beat on my first playthrough though, so I don't know if you'll finish it in one week.

Fable 2 might eventually come to PC, but I would guess not anytime sooner than 6 months after the Xbox 360 version is released - as MS usually likes to milk their console exclusives for as much as possible before they port.

No inflatable ♀ or ♂ half-elf love doll? I am disappointed.

Even tho' I already have the original Witcher boxed game I still may buy a retail copy of the enhanced. Support the 'little guy' I always say. Especially when it's a good game. I'll give my original to a gaming friend. I'll wait for the doll in a subsequent patch. ;)

Got Witcher Enhanced preordered for pickup tommorow. Excited to check that game out. Needed a slight change from my FPS addiction.

Fable 2 probably wont come out for another year or so. Fable: The Lost Chapters didn't come to PC until after a year it was out on XBox. But I loved playing that game. It was lots of fun.

I'd definately recommend Mass Effect. Bioware has a top notch record of great RPGs and Mass Effect is one badass game. Plays like a 3rd person shooter and its pretty heavy on the action which is a great thing to see in RPGs. Fairly open ended gameplay but still linear enough where you won't be lost. Dialogue, cutscenes, and writing are excellent. Great graphics too. One of the coolest storylines I've seen in an RPG in years.. Probably since the Baldur's Gate series.

Mass Effect has SecuROM DRM on it, so for me that's out. Does The Witcher have any DRM on it, especially of that kind of level?

    The devil.

I would say also give Stalker a look. It's a RPG cloaked in a FPS. I suppose you could finish it in about a week. Also, you should be able to get it for $15-20 by now. Just add some mods to bump up the graphics if you choose, but you won't really need them.

Its not a hard choice, ive beaten both.

Result of a choice in Mass Effect:
*Riding in the elevator* "In other news such and such happened, it was very [insert your decision here]."

Result of a choice in The Witcher:
"HOLY CRAP I GOT A F^^KING ************ HELPING ME NOW" "BUT IF I MADE THE OTHER CHOICE I CAN USE ******* TO MAKE *******"

    or

"OMG THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO THAT TO THAT ***** IN THE CAVE" "OMG AS A RESULT I CANT GET THIS CRITICAL ITEM AT X POINT IN THE GAME"

    *** = spoilers

The Witcher has DRM, but it's no where near as intrusive or annoying as SecuRom. The only thing I've found about their DRM is that noCD patches do not work but backup CDs running off Daemon tools allow the game to work without a disc.

DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a way for publishers and independent game developers to control access to their games. There are a variety, but mostly boils down to the use of CD-Keys which you probably have done before. For Mass Effect it uses a version of Securom 7 which inlcudes a CD-Key check, a 3 install limit of the game, and I think online registration. Steam can also be considered DRM since you cannot play games purchased through it without Steam.

The intent of DRMs is to stop illegal distribution of a company's games and possibly prevent people from reselling their games when they're done with it.

LOL! You don't "beat" games nowadays. It's not like games are made to try and pummel you to a pulp. Games are meant to be enjoyed and finished. "Beating" a game is such a misnomer.

    I'm just sayin'. :)

Ahhh, it's all about how you 'smited that game!' or perhaps 'smote that game.'

Anyway, why don't you buy both Mass Effect AND Witcher. I'm sure I've been seeing Mass Effect at discounted prices at the moment and Witcher Enchanced should be quite cheap when it's released anyway. The first is great if you're enthralled by graphics and you're looking for a refreshing take on the RPG genre (no swords :p ) but the story isn't spectacular by any means.

The second, I can't comment on. I'm still waiting eagerly on trying the re-release out.
