Elder Scrolls: Arena and Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall can be downloaded for free at www.elderscrolls.com

Morrowind is #3, Oblivion is #4...these are #1 and #2 as far as timeline...

They are fairly small files (I believe both together are <200MB) and run under DosBox with a minimum of fuss if you know how to use DosBox...

There's also the Might and Magic series...pick your poison...#9 wasn't really finished but it approximates Oblivion...#6 and #7 were probably the high points of the series...

You can try Ultima 8 (cross between Mario Bros and Baldur's Gate) or Ultima 9 (similar to Might and Magic 9)...Ultima 7 is the high point of that series on the PC and runs quite well under DosBox...

Then, there's always either version of Neverwinter Nights...or Temple of Elemental evil for turn-based, strict AD&D rule adherence *yawn* with little story and lots of combat...if that floats your boat, you can take another step down and try Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor...

And you mentioned Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale...so try Planescape: Torment...same flavor...and actually my favorite of the ones listed in this paragraph...

If steam-punk is your flavor, there's Arcanum...and if post-apocalyptic sci-fi makes you all tingly inside, then there's Fallout and Fallout 2...

And if you want to go older than Ultima 8, and Might and Magic 6, then there are lots upon lots upon lots of RPGs...back when RPGs and simulators ruled the PC before the console crowd migrated over...

    Arcanum, as mentioned, is great.

Also, if you like Diablo, try Divine Divinity. Very similar in gameplay, but much deeper (better IMO) story and more wide open world.

What about Fallout 1 and 2?
Divine Divinity is really a good game, like someone above already stated - a must play for RPG fan, especially since finally sequel get's released soon Dungeon Keeper II is also awesome game....from 1999 or 2000 if I remember correctly, but addictive

I would second Fallout 1 and 2. Both great games and not heavy on system requirements.

    Depends what "low graphics" means.

Apart from the Black Isle sprite-titles (Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2):

    Titan Quest
(Get the gold pack with the expansion)

And Morrowind - which graphics aside is far more detailed than Oblivion. I would say a better game, but that's subjective.

Another vote for Mount & Blade. There's still many things to be improved (like having a real sense of purpose) but for the action alone it's worth your time.

how old is old? how low is low?
some of my favorite old RPGs are...
Might and Magic ( 1 through 8... 1 and 2 are like 16 color pre-mouse but still good, 3, 4, and 5, are my favs... 9 is ok, but really only good if you use the community made patch, since they rushed it out the door cuz they were going out of business)

Betrayal at Krondor is awesome even though its really dated graphically, its a great story and fun to play, one of the first 3D world RPGs... the story was written by an author instead of just game makers, and the whole play through is like reading a book.

People keep saying Morrowind, but Daggerfall was good as well, I probably played it more than Morrowind, and its free for anyone now, no need to pirate.

Eye of the Beholder 1, 2 and 3, are quite old (like 386 days), but are very good...

I'm for Planescape: Torment but as a caveat its not for the faint of heart. If you're prepared to see what is THElargest storyline in any RPG history that had some ridiculous number of talented writers behind it then this is probably for you. If you're more of a Diablo hack and slash man give it a skip.
