The lowest useable widescreen (16:10) scren resolution that I am aware of is 1280x800 which is really the 1024x768 resolution of widescreen.

Why isn't there a 960x600 resolution, the widescreen version of 800x600? or even 1120x700?

This would allow for gaming with less powerful GPU's in widescreen mode.

The WideScreen fix for Rainbow Six Vegas came with a 900*600 file. I could never get it to work... Maybe I should try the other ones.

Technically it should be 720x480 - Widescreen TV's of course that wouldn't really be practical lol

The 1280x800, in terms of pixels, yes, is equivalent to 1024 x 768 (well, it has a bit more), but truthfully, the widescreen equivalent of 1024x768 is 1024x640. The 1280x800 has more pixels than 1024x768 but quite a bit less than 1280x1024... so it's really smack dab in the center; not quite conforming to either.

Likewise, the widescreen equivalent of 800 x 600 would simply be 800 x 500 (this time, the pixel difference is very small).

Quite honestly, you should be able to set those resolutions within games that support widescreen so I don't know what the problem is .

No, because "equivalents" are always, and have always been, based on vertical pixels, not horizontal pixels.

    Yeah, I know.

Which is actually quite odd--the convention should be changed for widescreens.

That said, I care more about pixel counts than vertical or horizontal pixels.

You can have 1x5000 pixels for all I care, but even a screen with 4x2000 pixels would require more processing power to render to.

At the end of the day, it's the TOTAL pixels that accounts for performance--not horizontal nor vertical pixels.

Correct, but gaming performance isn't really a consideration behind the resolution conventions. If you think about it, it's more natural for a widescreen display to be the same as a standard display, just lengthened side to side. That's where the vertical pixel standard comes from. Thus gaming performance will be lower because the widescreen display is a larger (pixel-wise) overall display.

When you put it that way, yes, it does make a lot of sense :).

More total pixels = less performance. Period.

I was just wondering if there is a 'standard' 16:10 widescreen resolution below 1280x800? I'd like the option to run at 960x600 if I want to turn the detail up a bit. But it seems that's not a common resolution without some sort of workaround usually.

No, there is no standardized 16:10 resolution below WXGA. Sometimes you can tweak games' settings to be able to play at 960x600, but usually just playing at 800x600 or 1024x768 is fine.

modify your nvidia .inf driver file.

OK but what is the point? You can buy a WUXGA resolution and play in 800X600 w/no stretching. so what are you asking? Do you want VGA wide screen? what? I am very confused?

No, if you have a WUXGA screen and want to play in (full screen) 800x600, there will be disproportionate stretching. I.E. it will be stretched further side to side than it is up and down, causing it to look distorted.,

you are correct, I explained badly. You actualy can do as I said just set your card to not stretch (1600X1200 Boxed). Pixel for pixel it will match. Am I missing anything? ;)

Yes! IT IS NOT WIDESCREEN! If a game will run widescreen, I want widescreen. Usually a wider FOV than 4:3. If I wanted 4:3 I would buy a 4:3 screen.

BUNBUNS - Thanks. Will give that a try and see if I can get it to work. Should that whole line exist currently in the inf file? It doesn't seem to exist, so should I just add it?
