i got my DELL M1710 laptop the over day and i have problems...

    Specs:
    t7200, 2048mb ram, 100HD, GO 7950 GTX, VISTA PREMIUM

Wen i play half life 2 the screen flickers loads, its completely unplayable. Nvidia and dell dont have vista drivers for it.

Also, my laptops didnt come preinstalled with quickset which apparently lets you change the colours of the LEDs. how do i get it? i didnt pay £1100 for these problems...

please dont tell me i cant fix either of these problems. its killing me... lol.

What? They don't have vista drivers? That sounds really wierd. Are you sure that's the real problem or do you think it's just a cover-up of the real problem?

I've never heard of the quickset - when you bought the laptop was it an option?

The thing which I would immediately recomend is getting a down-grade back to XP. Never hurts and should sort out your half-life problem - brilliant game isn't it? I was addicted until I started playing Deus X...

Ok I also had problems with my M1710. I use to lag on BF2 with vista so I downgraded to XP and it workes perfectly fine now! If you don't have quickset it should be on the resource CD if not, go to the Dell support site. For the drivers, try to go directly to nvidia.com and download there to start with. But first thing you should do is install XP.

Yes, I've just been talking around and some other people do seem to be having problems with drivers for graphics cards when they've bought from Dell. I recommend sending it back and buying a different notebook. I really don't like Dell and now I can see why.

What sort of price range would you be looking at and then I can recomend a different laptop.

Don't send it back, Dell is a good brand, if he bought it from ebay that might the problem, I had the same problems and I sorted it out. You can do a fresh install of Vista if XP bores you, but lol, you prefer having problems with Vista than being able to use your computer with XP? Just reinstall that graphic driver.

I'm sorry - Dell might be good for monitors and other peripherals but they are RUBBISH for computers. Practically everyone I know who has bought a Dell has been unhappy with it. This driver problem is NOT uncommon.

They might be cheap, but they're cheap rubbish.

If you read through these forums you will probably see that all brands have an equal number of complaints. When you find a PC manufacturer which keeps a 100% record please tell me. Dell is a good brand, it wouldn't be where it is now if it wasn't. I have had 3 Dell laptops and 0 problems except for lag in games which was fixed by downgrading to XP which puts the problem in Microsoft's hands not Dell's. Dell is in no way rubbish....

No but seriously, when I'm out talking to people they all say don't go Dell. My own experiences of Dell have been really bad as well.

Someone I know had fault after fault after fault and then when they took it back to the shop to repair (still under valid guarantee) they said it was against Dell policy to provide a free repair service and would not replace it either.

That's one person, I know there are many others. But the reason why you tend to hear more complaints than praises is because most people that are happy don't come on the internet to rant about it. Nearly everyone who has a problem with a computer posts about it which gives you the illusion that everyone is complaining about Dell.

OK. About an equal number of my friends have Dells as they do to Sagers, Clevos, HPs and Samsung put together. That's because they're cheap (rubbish). I have a Clevo now - I had a Dell before and it stopped working after about 6 months. My Clevo's been fine for a year. All my friends with Dells have complained at least five times and two of them have got rid of them. Only one is moderately satisfied and he doesn't do any big work. I've asked the others what they think and not ONE of them could complain. Now doesn't that say something?

Oh and by the way I don't go on what people on internet forums say - half of them don't know what they're talking about. If I say something it's because I've seen it and belive it. Yes people do complain about Dells on these forums but unless I've seen the notebook I don't take it as a valid complaint.

Dell are cheap rubbish? How does an Intel processor become cheap rubbish in a Dell case? Or an Nvidia card? Why would I lie and say that I have problems with my Dell when I don't? I am not going to say that it's not working when it is. If Dell was so rubbish it would go out of business wouldn't it? It's great on internet forums, you always find such social people "My friend has this, the other has that, and my girlfriend's brother has that". And don't insinuate that I don't know what I am talking about, clearly with the claim that Dell is rubbish and cheap shows something about you. Aren't you the guy who said that Bluray drives are so expensive that it would be better to buy a PS3 and take the the bluray drive out???

Hey I never said that you never knew what you were talking about. I don't remember making a post like that? Maybe I did months ago.

You win, but just because I think if you get too worked up you might explode and sue me or something. Also I've got better things to be doing than arguing with you.

Dude calm down it's not like it matters anyway. I just don't like Dell and your not going to change that just on this one thread. Sorted.

EDIT: Just one thing that I might concede though: Dell WERE good about 15 years ago. I bought a very good DOS package from the in 1992.

If you have a 7950GTX you will never need Vista, if you want the eye-candy of Vista but with the non-resourcehogging of XP then the following google searches should help:

    WindowBlinds (Aero Interface)
    TopDesktop (Flip 3D")

My XPS works great, but I guess it doesn't since your "survey", consisting of you and five friends, found out that your dell computers weren't working right. Did you use sampling methods applying quotas or probability, and are your statistics representing a sample of the US population who own Dell computers? No, you are simply whining about your personal experiences.

OK. I'm designing a questionaire. When I go to work tommorrow I'm going to ask all the questions. They're going to be completely neutral.

I predict that the majority of people will have Dells. I predict that the majority of those people with Dells will not be happy with them. But we shall see.

EDIT: Oh and in aswer to your question: if it IS a driver problem then steam will tell you when you try to load the game. If steam doesn't warn you about anything then it's not a driver problem. Try it and then give us the answer so we can help you.

Hi Zkureeman, I have an XPS with a very similar config to you. I was running Windows XP and have recently changed to Windows Vista 32 bit.

I found overall game performance on Vista dropped slightly compared to XP. I also experienced some problems loading some games and problems with the dell d/dock. On the Dell website, Drivers, M1710, NVidia. Be sure to try the Performance Driver which is listed further down the page. This resolved my game and d/dock faults. The Nvidia drivers have a long way to go and I noticed a big difference (for the worse) in anti aliasing.

When installing the NVidia drivers I ran into some problems with the MS drivers and had to enable the Administrator account (disabled in Vista by default) and install the drivers. I also configured my desktop as Admin and then booted back into user, removing access to Administrator again. This may need to be done with the XPS in the dock, screen up and external monitors plugged in.

Most other drivers work out of the box with Vista but you will find things like the touchpad scroll requires a driver from the dell site.

Just recently I installed 4GB of RAM and found that 32 bit OS's support 4GB total, including your video card RAM. So Vista 32 is only showing < 3.5GB system memory. I have ordered a copy of Vista 64 bit but I suspect the lack of drivers will force me away, back to 32 bit.

Dell Drivers: Dell website --> Support TAB --> Drivers --> Choose a model --> Change OS to suit --> Check for Performance Drivers (scroll down page).
