I currently have a M17x R1 and I currently have a 260m nvidia card, I have a 560m that i swapped with the 260m but the driver or pc did not recognize it. I have read a few posts i think on here about a 560m card would work on a m17x R1 by using a external monitor, if this is true i have a working external monitor i just have no clue of the step by step procedure into getting the drivers to be recognized. If anyone has some experience maybe give a short walkthrough or if anyone has done it their steps would be greatly appreciated since i am not the greatest with laptop computers thx.

You should try to disable Hybrid SLI in bios (set to integrated only), boot to external monitor, install nvidia drivers and then reboot and ...enable Hybrid SLI in bios to enable the 560m, it should auto install drivers upon boot.

So I replaced the 260m with the 560m and my pc has a black screen before followed by a long beep and 2 short beeps after. I checked with the beep code and it states that it is a motherboard problem. The 260m works fine so I am not sure why I can't even get into the pc w/ the 560 video card

After a few attempts to fix it I got into the pc with the 560m in it. The problem that I am having now is how to boot from my external monitor I plunge
I plugged in the VGA cables, but when I started my laptop there was a black screen but I heard it go into windows. So if anyone knows how to boot from an external monitor with an m17x would be really helpful tanks

Should have a function button on your F keys that look like a display. Hold FN and hit that

    Hello, Jables, welcome to NBR.

    The combination should be Fn+F6.
Is the 560M a Dell card?

Yes it's a dell nvidia Geforce GTX 560m PGRAA LS-7191P

Should I put on integrated graphics then try to install drivers, i don't think my fn f6 works (my external monitor works with my 260m don't need to push fn f6)
Sorry I'm not the smartest with computers if anyone knows how to get a 560m to work on original m17x would be greatly appreciated, I'll keep trying other methods

That's what i thought, the external should post without the need of Fn+F6.
If the system doesn't post at all with the 560M, then it's not driver related.

What system BIOS are you running? If older than A07, put your 260M in (because you'll need to see what you're doing), download the BIOS file and flash.

A few things for you to try after:
Enable the integrated GPU and see if the 560M is listed under Device Manager in Windows (Right click Computer > Properties > Device Manager) along with the 9400M (integrated GPU).

If it's listed (probably as Default VGA adapter), right click it and choose Properties, in the new window, press the Details tab and choose Hardware IDs.
Post everything you see there and i'll help you install the driver.

just doing some research for upgrading the M17x R1. the cards worked just fine IMO. since nvidia ditched support on optimus and hybrid sli with 9400m on current driver, we got no way to got it working on standard unmodded drivers.
most the the laptop that uses gtx460m and above comes with i5 and i7 processors. which got IGPs inside cant be turned off. if it is any way to mod the drivers so the cards with work in dedicated mode w/o the need of the IGP maybe it is possible.
