Hi,
I recently purchased my Alienware M9700 secondhand from my brother who has upgraded. I'm not a technophile I'm affraid (I had never seen an Alienware computer before!) but I needed a good system with a large screen and this M9700 seemed to fit the bill. It was supplied with xp installed and all of the latest drivers from Alienware.
Although I don't use it for games much - I mainly use it for presentaions and ofice applications, whenever I use a graphically intensive programme the picture stalls and stutters for approx 1 second in every 15 seconds or so. I've checked all drivers, even did a complete re install of them. I have read about temperature issues with the graphics cards so I installed a temperature logger and noted a maximum of 83 degrees gpu core temperature. That didn't seem too high to me as I was told the threshold was 110 for my gpu's?
Does anyone have any ideas? Sorry if I am not too good with the technical terms but I will do my best if anyone needs further information in order to help.
Thanks for your time
Dan

hi dan
what graphically intensive programmes are you running -
and when you recorded that temp what was the laptop running
-
Hi,
By graphically intensive I really anything that needs the cards to kick into 3d mode I guess. Whenever I use any 3d game such as Flight Sim 2004 or Train sim 2008 I get the problem. Even using a video player in a window, such as You tube, I get a stuttering . Incidentally it also effects the sound which seems to get stuck too - like an old record getting stcuk in a groove! After a second or so it clears and all is well for 15 secs or so. -
Temp was recorded whist running Flight Sim 2004 after about 15 mins of use. Temp climbed quickly to 82 then gradually peaked out after 15 mins.

ok try installing the more recent drivers im assuming that you installed the ones that come with the laptop //www.laptopvideo2go.com
also downloads GPUz and find out what speed your clocks are running at
i bet you hate your brother lol -
I tried the most recent drivers from laptop video when I did the driver re installation, followed all theinstallation instructions to the letter but they seized up the system! In the end I had to use the newest driver listed by Alienware again.
Driver Details;
Forceware version 175.28, DirectX 9c
Card clocks;
2D: 100/100
3D reduced power; 200/300
3d: 375/500
I didn't pay a lot for the laptop, judging by the advertisements on ebay I paid about 20% of it's market value , so I guess I cannot complain. It does all the office work I needed it for with consumate ease, just this problem with games when I'm trying to relax a bit.
Thanks for your time, Dan -
if its not under warrenty try each card on ther own one of them may be defective also see wat temp your cpu is
