Something to consider; Mobility 4850 or Geforce 9800M GTX.![]()
-
Nice, very nice. However which MXM type is that? Hopefuly it's MXM type II so I can use it in my HP 8510p where is actually HD 2600
. Any1 ? Any more info about MXM type?
-
It is Type II.
-
It looks like a III to me. The M96 could be II though
-
As far as I'm aware of ATI's has only two types.
-
Shouldn't it be MXM III? Same deal with 9800GTX?
-
Thats MXM-III from the looks.
It does not have HE tab, so it shows that it has a 35w TDP cap. -

now the real question: when.
-
Wow nice, damn nice to have two mobile 4870 in Crossfire in a notebook
-
rofl, I wonder if they decided to just skip the 3870.

I've got the desktop version of the 4850 and it is a monster of a card!
-
yeah seriously. the High end mobile HD 3000 series isnt even out yet..
-
Maybe ATi did skip the 3870 lol. I have one in my preordered laptop right now, but I have a feeling they are going to have to upgrade me.
-
IIRC they did end up skipping the mobile 38xx series since they couldn't get the power consumption down to what they wanted. However, I don't remember the site where I read that.
EDIT: damn, now there's a new high end I want but know I shouldn't get since I need money for university. -
Awesome looking card, getting the desktop version of the 4870 soon.
ATi are coming back it seems! -
Grumble. My notebook with a 9800M GT isn't even in my hands yet, and already something's in the works that'll outstrip it by a good 50-60%.
Well, I hope MXM'll come in handy... -
-
it better fit into a 15 inch laptop.
-
-
It will fit into AW or Clevo's 15" laptops functionally, just watch.
Especially since Clevo's M860TU is getting the shaftstick because m15x is compatible with 9800GTX, Clevo will most likely try to trump it with this card. -
This series is simply mind blowing.
But I can only wait so long to buy a notebook.
How do you think the 9800m GTS would stack up against a hypothetical Mobility 4850 clocked a bit lower than it's desktop version? Or would that be impossible to say...? -
NO 15.4" notebook will support the heat and power of the 9800M GTX.
Only the 8800M GTX or new 9800M GT (same card really) will be the top card for 15.4" for the moment. -
Eh, it's a bit early to give the card a 20-40% lead on the 9800GTX isn't it? There aren't even any benches done on on the GTX yet.
I'm more curious as to the price point for the Mobile 4800 upgrade. I probably can't afford it.
Edit: 800 stream processors? Yikes. -
I've had my eye on that chip for awhile. Very nice. I'm sure it will find its way into a Lenovo notebook.
-
Any rough guess when it is coming out?
-
EDIT: Aha! Found the site, not enough time to find the actual article though. Site is: http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-5618-view-HD-4870x2-R700-GPU.html I found the link at the bottom when searching around. -
Looks like someone else found the article I saw, but from a different site: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=283063 (link in thread).

^^ the 8800M GTX has been re-branded in the 9800M GT.
All specs and performance between the two cards are the same. -
You stated earlier in this thread "Thats MXM-III from the looks.
It does not have HE tab, so it shows that it has a 35w TDP cap."
This is the same TDP of the the 9800M GT / 8800M GTX. If the M88 has that same TDP, then theoretically the heat/power of the M88 (or it being MXM-III for that matter) wouldn't be a roadblock(s) to the implementation of a M88 card into a 15" supporting the 9800M GT / 8800M GTX.
Support of that card by Alienware/Clevo, though, is a whole other story. -
A quad core and 4850 in a 15.4 inch by the end of the year; pricey yes, but if that combo actually comes out I just may be all over it.
-
Quad core will not come to a 15.4" notebook by the end of this year.
-
If AMD/ATI actually released this card in ANY form of MXM to etailers like newegg, I'd definately get myself one, but until then, I can't see how the MXM spec benefits anyone here if there's no possible way to actually obtain one without buying a new notebook.
If AMD had say... a store on thier website that allowed the purchase of these directly from them that would be even better. -
You can get MXM videocards through many vendors online that sell MXM compatible notebooks.
or sites like:
I'm well aware of that. but most notebook vendors don't just freely sell these. Your required to go though a process. It's not like you just add to cart and buy them. And MXM-Upgrade doesn't carry anything high end right now. I remember them having 8800GTX's listed, but not anymore. And even that isn't a simple click and buy it style purchase.
Buying an MXM video card should be as easy as buying a stick of ram.
