Well, my Inspiron 9300 pooped out about two weeks ago, and while I've been waiting for my Inspiron 1720 to arrive, my slight addiction to WoW has decreased significantly. I really have no desire to go back to that game and was hoping that any of you might be able to give me a few suggestions for a good MMORPG or even just a good RPG.
Probably my favorite MMORPG has been Star Wars Galaxies, not because it was related to Star Wars, but because it seemed to include everything that I look for in that type of game. Housing, a HUGE player created market and economy, a large variety of professions that all seemed to have a use, crafting that actually played a large roll in the economy, and the option to choose non-combat related skills and still advance your character in the game.
That outlines pretty much what I'm looking for, so any suggestions and reasons why you suggest a particular game would be greatly appreciated.

ditto =\ (for a good mmorpg)
guild wars is the other WoW out there coming out with the expansion in late august. not sure how popular it is though as i only played WoW, says that lots of the quests/pve requires groups of 8. i'm afraid to buy it and find no one around the beginning areas. -
If you want an advanced, player-driven economy with the possibility of playing virtually ANY profession go try Eve Online, there is a free trial. It's really not a game for everyone, but it is still growing. The game runs on a single shard (server) that has had 30,000+ people on it at a single point actively playing the game. The game world is extremely vast.
Anyway, free trial is free trial, I encourage you guys to try it out.
Planetside is my favorite MMOFPS (Massive Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter). Its just plain fun to jump into the game world, grab a rifle or some mines or a gunship or tank, and go hold off the enemy trying to take over one of your bases or go assault an enemies' base(s). If you get into a good outfit (guild) things are extra fun, you might end up doing some really strategic assaults or holding off a massive opposing zerg (meaning huge and unorganized, not actual zerg) force by sheer team-ingenuity.
Hmm. I loved Everquest 1, I hear that is still going. Heh.
Auto Assault is being shut down at the end of the summer, shame too, it was really fun.
Oh! City of Heroes is small change in the MMO design, its pretty fun and isn't as drastic a change as going for Eve Online.
On the RPG front, I FINALLY started playing Oblivion on my Xbox360 again, as long as you don't get stuck micromanaging and trying to max everything out and just play to have fun, it's a FANTASTIC game. Besides, you can max everything out anyway, without the tedious and fun-sucking micromanagement that I was doing last time I tried playing. -
Guild Wars is in no way the "other WoW." Like I've said before, the PvE is not that great and the game has always been heavily focused on the PvP. This has degraded over time thanks to ArenaNet being "lol bad" and giving in to the PvE care bears. Many new players may like the PvP better now due to how everything is now way too simplified (think "Build" Wars). If you do still want to pick Guild Wars up than don't be too worried about getting into groups. This holds especially true if you get Nightfall because you can pretty much just take henchmen or heroes (NPCs that'll follow you around) and let them do everything... The game is a shell of what it once was due to ArenaNet alienating long time players in both aspects (PvE and PvP) of the game to draw new people to make money due to their poor system.
My recommendation is too look out for Warhammer Online when it comes out early 2008. -
I loved WoW. But I have also grown bored of it and sold off my account. I honestly don't think there will be any other game like it. I tried guildwars and didn't like it. There really won't be any MMORPG that will top WoW IMO. But who knows =)

MMOs have only existed for 10 years!! There will be MULTIPLE new MMOs in the NEXT 10 years and I bet you a pretty penny that at least one of them will be more popular than WOW. Who knows, it might just be another MMO made by Blizzard, or maybe it'll be some freebie like RuneScape (which is pretty darn popular as it is). -
I seriously doubt Blizzard will launch a different one anytime soon, i think they are just gonna keep expanding WoW while moving on with their other games. I think WoW will go on for a long time as #1 because blizzard will keep expanding it. Just my guess, no one knows for sure.
Edit: other game types, probably more rts's -

Yea that looks like a real contender. Whether it will top WoW idk, but it will definately compete. I haven't seen anything but it seems like it would be a little less main stream, i don't see a lot of parents getting into it.(or that kind of gamer)
Yes, i know a few parents, ~10% of my friends, who play WoW. -
I really enjoyed WoW and I can understand why it is so popular. But after almost a year, I've come to realize that it really lacks depth. You're either farming instances for that piece of gear that's slightly better than what you're currently wearing, or farming gold to max a profession that will reward you with a piece of gear that is slightly better than the one that you're currently wearing, etc. There is really not much else to do other than grind your way to that next better helmet.
I'll bring up Star Wars Galaxies (even though the reviews were not that great) again for an example of what I think of when I think of depth. You could make your living off of building and selling furniture, medicine, armor, weapons, houses, factories, transportation, etc. Not once for any of those would you have to kill a single critter. You could log in and go shopping in any one of the thousands of user made shops to find that one Armorer that farmed the highest recorded quality of materials to make that standard armor, 10x better.
I guess that's what I'm looking for atm. I want to be able to log in and have options rather than knowing that everytime I log in I'm going to try to find a group that's running the instance that might potentially drop that pair of pants that I'm looking for.
And thanks for the EVE Online suggestion, I had looked into it a while a go, but had read that the micro-management is pretty intense so I forgot about it. I think I'm probably gonna check it out, if my 1720 ever gets out of the testing stage.
@ BuckeyeFan - Your sig, I was there! Hell of a game that was! -
I play Silkroad Online. It's free, fairly pretty and set on the silkroad, from ancient China to eastern Europe (new version, recently relased). Fun too.
-
dude, i know wut you mean about Galaxies. I miss that game (before they ruined it). I won't play WOW because in comparisson it has NO depth. I remember being employed by other players to simply hunt npc animals for money, i owned a store, a town etc. it was sick, a shame they don't come out with a good sci-fi themed MMORPG that has the same depth, economy, and player interactions. I feel ya bro
-
I guess they need to make Eve Online more approachable, Star Wars: Galaxies style, and more people would play. Otherwise it has even more depth. Player owned star systems, player owned space stations, corporate space armadas, etc. -
Warhammer Online will be a good choice when it finally is launched.
-
I was actually looking into eve online, Its just an odd concept being a spaceship, and not being able to walk around as a character. But I'm definatly interested in it.
-
Warhammer: Age of Reckoning and Pirates Of The Burning Sea are going to be two of the best MMORPGs to be released in a long time when they come out in a few months.
-
I second the notion for Eve. Great game if you have the time to sink into it. The only flaw is that learning a new skill is entirely time based. IE: Cruiser lvl 5 takes something like 20 days to learn, regardless of whether your playing or not, and regardless of anything you kill (there is no XP, your only rewards from killing things are loot and bounties.)
Don't let it discourage you though, you can have a pretty viable character within a few months.
I'll also advocate Pirates of the Burning Sea. It is set to come out this fall, with an open beta shortly before.
Player run economy? Check. Nation vs. Nation PVP? Check. Pure awesome ship to ship combat? Check. Pirates? Check. Ninjas? Not confirmed, but highly likely.
What else could you want from a game? -
Thanks a lot for the great suggestions. I think I'm going to try to get into Eve Online until Warhammer and Pirates comes out. I also signed up for the Warhammer Beta, so hopefully that pans out.
Thanks again for giving me some options!
