The Nvidia is faster than the X700 by a long shot; they aren't even in the same class. The X700 is comparable to the Nvidia GeForce 6600 Go, not the 6800. The GeForce 6800 Go is comparable to the X800, but you'll be hard pressed to find a notebook that has it.

It is better if you do a bit of your own research beforehand, that question is easy to find the answer to.

Nvidia has great driver support no matter how outdates your gpu is. I would choose nvidia over ati because solely because of the better driver support. Nvidia official drivers support every notebook manufacturer while ATI only supports the more well known brand ones.

So i would choose nvidia over ati.

I've had ATI graphics for over ten years, never had a problem with any of their drivers/support. So, I'm not so convinced that Nvidia has better support.

Although, I do agree with you that Nvidia has better graphics support for older cards, that's always a nice thing. :)

You'll only find the 6800 on 17" screened laptops so if mobility is a concern the x700 might be a better choice although as noted it is a slower card.

But how much slower is the X700? Can someone show me the 3DMark benchmarks and clock speeds?

    Hi

    2270 3DMark05 at 350/300. 2850 at 370/440. 6800go is much faster people are getting around 4000.

Yea, the 6800 is about equal to the x800, which is a step ahead of the x700.

The average score for 3dmark05 for the x700 was 25xx, while overclocking it pumps it to a tad over 3000, unstable at most times though.

    Resurrecting this one...

I have a chance to pick up the OEM Dell Go 6800 which was pulled from an XPS. There are two heatpipes attached to the part, in the pictures I've seen.

If possible I want to swap this with the x700 Mobility in my Acer Ferrari 4005WLMi. I have not pulled that part out of my laptop to see what cooling solution is being used.

Can I get any advice, caveats etc. as how to go abiut doing this and what the possible results might be.

No idea how the Ferrari IV platform (AMD Mobile Turion) compares to say the 9xx Intel chipset found on the XPS. Both are PCI-e based which is one reason this plan may be crazy enough to work!

No, you can't install that in your Acer Ferrari. I don't even think the Acer's card is removable, and even if it is, I highly doubt it would fit.

Support from Ati and Nvidia is similar, so no qualms there.

Image quality and video playback I will have to give the nod to Ati.

Nvidia has the nod for overall all out performance.

In this case yes the 6800 is way beyond the x700.

Yes, it is. The Go6400 is equivalent to the ATI Radeon X600. The X700 is about 1.5-2x faster than the X600.

    Sure.

The X1600 is about ~20-25% faster than the X700 according to what I have heard/seen. My best guess would put the X1600 about 10-15% slower than the Go6800. , but then again, it's not meant to compete with the Go6800. It is designed a replacement for the current X700.

We'll have to wait for more benchmarks to come out in order to make a more thorough conclusion. :) Just take what I said more like guidelines rather than facts.

yeh true. Im assuming it also features more in the specs and can deliver a few nicer effects than a go6800. I wonder what it competes like agains the go7xxx series though.

The Mobility Radeon X1600 will compete with the upcoming Nvidia GeForce Go7600 - that's the replacement for the current Go6600.

I would give the edge to the 6800 over the x700 if you can live with the bigger form factor of the notebook (usually DTR class foir the 6800).

The x1600 fits the medium sized 5-7 pound notebook and it offers better features than the X700 (AVIVO, PS3). It is quite fast too coming in at 20-40% faster depending on the game. That should put it in the same class as the 6800.

The x1600 has the new ATI memory controller which has been tweaked to perform very well in Doom/Quake OpenGL games (traditionally a soft area for ATI).

x800? I haven't seen that one in any notebook yet. does it really exist?

Has anyone announced a 15" notebook using the x1600? I've seen the x1400 in a 15" Acer Core Duo machine but according to what i'm reading, the x700 will likely outperform the x1400.

I'm looking at several options using the x700 but might opt to wait for the x1600 if it's going to be used in 15" designs (and doesn't increase the price too much).

Yes, the Mobility Radeon X800 is real, although extremely rare. I know of only two notebooks that have it, and they use desktop processors and run hot.

You're right - the X700 is faster than the X1400, although the X1400 is faster than an X600.

Just looked up the Acer 8204...wow. That's a very nice machine. At $2200, it's about $700 more than I'm willing to spend though. Perhaps the x700 is right for me after all.

You can also get it in the Asus Z81SP, but that runs a Pentium 4 processor, which makes the notebook big due to the large cooling solution required for the processor's heat output, and has poor battery life.

I looked up at ebay.com and i found some dell 9300 with Geforce card. It was about about $1600
I also found the ASUS the same price. But i am not sure about which is better the Dell or the Asus.
    What do you think guys?

    Well, here's my view:

    Dell:
    -Runs cooler
    -Bigger
    -Slimmer
    -Bland looks

    Asus:
    -Better build quality
    -Hotter
    -Thicker
-Smaller dimensions (15.4" display vs. 17" for the Dell)

I'd take a look at some reviews of the Z-81SP before you consider buying it. There's one on this site - be sure to read the discussion following the review too, a lot of good comments in there.

How does the X700, X1400 and the go7400 stack up against eachother? I know the X700 is better than the X1400 but I was wondering more how the 7400 stacks up against the other 2?

    X1400 should compare with Go7400, X1600 with the Go7600.

The X1400/Go7400 are a notch under the X700.

I have a Z81sp with a 6800 go in it and I must say that it's preformance is jaw dropping compaired to my old radeon 9700 pro that's in my desktop. I finally got around to runing some 3dMark on it and I got the following scores

Results were generated with stock drivers/no overclocking

    3Dmark05 - 3,830
    3Dmark06 - 1,809

Aquamark score, over 50,000 (forgot to take a screenie of it)
