Update on PC Gaming Alliance and departures of Microsoft and Nvidia
Not that it means much but I'm surprised MS didn't leave way earlier.
I dunno why nVidia did though.

Microsoft - not suprised. they dont really get the value of their platform as a gaming system. when mac takes over gaming i wont hesitate to switch over.
-
How much would you have to pay for a MacBook with a 5870? -
I suspect it's because Nvidia is going to be spreading their TWIMTBP onto other platforms now. Even if it's on the mobile ones like cell phones and tablets.
-
Not because it'll cost as much as a house, but rather because it'll burn your house down.
At this point, it won't shock me if MS actually stops investing money into DX development and even tries to kill PC gaming by force. -
If I am microsoft, I would quit PCGA as well if the president tells me their aim is to make all games accessible for all, including macs.

The PCGA was a bit of a joke in the first place if you ask me. As long as the API foundations are in place and accessible (DX and OpenGL), then the various manufacturers and software developers can tailor their products to them without too much trouble. I want to see DX kind of kicked to the curb though, to encourage developers to release games compatible with Mac and Linux as well as Windows. However the appeal of DX development is easy porting to the Xbox 360 and vise-versa.

Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Ive been thinking about something lately, lets say that this announcement triggered it.
Every dev out there is lamenting that PC Gaming is dyeing. Or is dead alredy. Poor sales and piracy are first things to blame, and i can be fine with these opinions, but lets be honest: pc gaming doesnt generate billions like consoles.
they need to get over it. Theres a reason why.
Hardware does costs. Its not like a console, where the hardware is the same for 5-6 years of his lifespan, where developers needs to figure out how to spill the last bit from their sdk, reaching inevitably the point of non return.
Optimization masters, is what i call them.
Second, pc gaming requires alot of time and knowledge, therefore the time invested on it doesnt quite repay the same time needed on consoles.
Console times are basically halved compared to pc.
Consoles doesnt need a team of testers on a thousand of machines because you need to ensure minimum and maximum requirements EACH time you develop something.
Consoles doesnt need a way to scale the engine for the above reason. Because the average laptop/desktop users who doesnt even know what a bit is with a crappy old machine PRETENDS to run crysis on a GMA915.
Third, the problem as i just stated are the users. Pc gaming should be a thing related to experienced users because involves ALOT of knowledge. Drivers optimization on end user is one of the thing, then OS optimization, hardware choice and so on. Too much stuff to be managed from a kid who goes to high school and again pretends with a preposterous manner to run Stalker CoP on a GeForce 6800GT on his daddy pc.
Fourth, the GPU manufacturers will stop someday, and in the near future as well, to develop newer GPUs.
Because they soon realize that theyre developing products for the few games out there that still running, like WoW or old FPS/MMORPG in general.
We will reach a point where crossfire and sli will be stupid (and if you noticed alot of newer products DOESNT SUPPORT THEM at all, or they badly implement them) because running a 4 year old game at 500fps will be nothing but a waste.
PCGA was a joke yes. But it was made to gave vigor to the whole pc gaming affair, helping developers into min requirements, beta testing, and stuff, without lucracy, all for free.
An alliance for gamers made by industry leaders AND gamers.
And now we're in the middle of nothing. More games have been canned. More games are not going to see the light (yes even a shoddy port, because thats what we're getting now....althought it can be negated soon) if they dont sell well.
Because theres no money flow behind a title that sell 30k copies on pc when the same watered down version sells a million on a console.
I feel ripped off. Every year we change our hardwares for a better gaming experience and we end always playing the same old games over and over because consoles gets the love. Eventually we buy a console, either sony or MS, to fill the gap.
I dream of a world where a three generations are present and strong, fighting genuinely each other. MS vs Sony vs PC Gaming.
Now we're getting the PC Gaming as a "complement" for either one of the two, which sux if you consider how much POWER and money a good pc requires/have.
Sorry for the long rant and for the crappy english, but thats my feeling. Ill continue on buying games, play them, and use my pc as my first gaming platform, because its infinte the extention of things you can do.
But the industry isnt helping us. Us that genuinely shell 4 GRANDS to buy a new laptop with avant-guarde technology.
Us that in a good will spend 700$ to upgrade motherboard, cpu, ram AND only 400$ for a BEASTY gpu.
Sorry to all, i know that my opinions arent totally correct. -
I don't care if PC gaming drops to 10% of its current share. I don't like what everybody else likes. Maybe commercial PC gaming is doomed (I doubt it), but that would only mean that we are transitioning to an open source, user generated, PC gaming industry. I'll take it. Quality will probably be better.
-
Open source is just there til they sell it for high enough price ...
ps.:
And it's so doesn't matter if the pc gaming dies until can pirate all console games from the net with pc and buy consoles dirt cheap .... and ppl talk a lot about pc game piracy .. ya my behind .. -
The open source model doesn't really work for gaming. Games are things that people enjoy for 10-100 hours and then largely forget about, whereas word processors and web browsers are things people use everyday for years. Given how it takes many years and hundreds of people to develop a commercial game, it'd be impossible to generate enough interest from talented/creative contributors for long enough to ever produce anything coherent.
Sure, there's games out there that remain popular for years after their release (Starcraft and Counter Strike come to mind), but those are far and few between. -
open source would work for mmorpg
-
Yeah, I don't see the open source world getting much of a foothold there either, with new MMORPGs coming out every week. -
Notice that both Nvidia and Microsoft logos are not in their main page. -
-
Speaking of MMOs...anyone ever hear of NEStalgia? NES style MMO. It's like the MineCraft of MMOs.
MS and Nvidia no longer part of PCGA
