    Microsoft announced DirectX10.1.

DX10.1 is an essential update for DX10.

DX10.1 is giving gamedevs the opportunity to make graphics that in first case where expected with DX10.

Gamedevs are looking forward to DX10.1

DX10.1 is only compatible with new graphiccards that still need to be released.

This year we can expect the first DX10.1 capable cards to get on the market; GeForce 9800-serie and amd/ati's R700-serie

With other words.. Later this year DX10 and my new laptop with a 8600m GT GPU wil be outdated.

    Got screwed big time.

When u want the nice goodies buy a new laptop.. Oh u just bought one because we told u, u will get the new goodies? Think twice, buy a new one again this year and u will get the goodies.

DX10.1 is a minor update. And if something is written in DX10.1 and you got DX10, it will automatically fall back to DX10, since it's backwardscompatible. Like The Forerunner said YOUR HARDWARE IS NOT OBSOLETE. And besides, nVidia was planning a 1 year product cycle anyways, and geforce 7 had an about 16 month long product cycle (7800 GTX to 8800GTX).

    YOUR HARDWARE IS NOT OBSOLETE!!!!

What the hell u mean with product cycle? I know how long it took when new cards came out but did MS tell that for the new DX u would need a new card?

DX10.1 means much more ease coding and programming for gamedevs. Do u think when they make 10.1 they will make a good backward 10.0 version? No way.. U will get 9c qualilty on your DX10 card. So the grapics promised on your DX10 card are not going to be delivered.. Well for 6 months then..

MY HW IS NOT OBSOLETE.. funny to see people with non- dx10 cards saying that.

That it's not obsolete duhh.. but this is just extreme.

DX10.1 won't feature new graphical effects.

The features that will add is a better control of AA and another thing, so it will effect less performances.

And by the way the "eye candy" of DX10 is bull sh!t.

DX10 is a new randering method, not a super-uber image quality. The diffrence in the image is that particles are now real, not pre-randered and you have the clouds affecting the sun. You'll get the same textures & details on DX9.0C. It also features a new physics engine, wich is done by the graphics card rather than the CPU so yeah they will be able to impove physics easier

DX10 was meant to improve peformances

Why does stuff like this upset people? Did you expect DirectX 10 to be around forever and no new hardware to come out?

OMGWTFBBQQQQQ!!!!111!!! het skyz is fallin!!!!111 OMG!!!!

Wow, since I don't even have a DX10 video card, I'm finding myself not really caring to be honest.

Since I don't own any DX10 games, I'm finding that I care even less.

At least someone with a sense of humour. An odd sense of humour... but at least something.
But honestly, this Directx 10.1 issue needs to be like stickied somewhere where everyone will see it, read it, think about it, and then post anything concerning it, and not just jump to conclusions.

What are you talking about? Can you provide a link where MS actually said DX10.1 makes coding easier such as maybe a new development program or changes to the HLSL? Now I agree that DX10.1 will make DX10 obsolete in that DX10 will no longer be the latest technology. However, DX10.1 doesn't seem to revolutionize anything, it simply is making optional features of DX10 mandatory. These include 4x AA and 32-bit floating point filtering instead of the current 16-bit. There are some improvements in resource handling, but somehow I bet mandating 4x AA and 32-bit filtering will lead to an overall performance drop rather than a gain.

And DX10.1 will be backward compatible with DX10. It is exactly the same as DX9.0c being backwards compatible with DX6.0 and before. The only time backwards compatibility was broken was between DX9.0c and DX10 because DX10 was basically redesigned for Vista. It is true that current DX10 GPUs will not be able to run in DX10.1 mode, but will continue to run in DX10 mode. Developers could choose to create a game that only runs on DX10.1 and excludes DX10, but the chances of that happening are basically zero. The fact is DX9.0c isn't disappearing anytime soon and neither is DX10. The difference between DX10 and DX10.1 is pretty small from a coding perspective anyways according to developers so they'll both be supported concurrently and everyone wins.

I don't thick its important enough to sticky. Its kiinda common knowledge now or should be, its a small upgrade and how could people think their dx10 hardware go obsolete when first deal dx10 game isn't even out. I will keep bumpin the thread occasionally until no longer necessary, I guess wu jen is doing that for me. He has been less then happy with people freaking out about it.

Nah, it's not that. It's just that I get tired of seeing the same threads that have already been covered 100+ times.

Will my xxxx notebook play xxxx game.

etc....this is one of those topics that has been covered profusely.

Yeah I know what you mean, new people join the forums and want answers right away and don't try searching first. Or any member doesnt do a search to see if a similar thread is open already.

Of course it's obsolete. It's like those "DX9 SM3 required" notices on games.
