I have an MSI GP60 with a gt740m and a i5 4200m, If I play games on high performance power plan without cooler booster, the laptop heats up to around 94c on GPU and CPU, if I use cooler boost and balanced power mode it goes to 78c on both, but balanced power mode really hurts performance in CPU heavy games. Without cooler booster, the heat goes to 95c no matter the power plan. I have cleaned the inside and reapplied IC Diamond to the CPU and GPU but temperatures are the same, I have also turned maximum processor state to 95% instead of 100%, nothing helps. I feel like I have tried everything, Is there anyway to stop the heat or is it normal?

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
velkar, you can try undervolting the CPU with Intel XTU, maybe also disabling TurboBoost if the former doesn't help.

Those temps seem a bit too high after repasting. Maybe you need to check if the paste was properly applied? Neither the GT740m nor the core i5 are very depanding components. I wonder if other users experience the same with that model?
You should check if the software Silent Option is compatible with your machine, and maybe tweak the fans so they spin faster without enabling full turbo fan.
Aside from checking the paste and vents, you should also consider undervolting as it was suggested. -
The temperatures are the same as the ones I got before I reapplied thermal paste.
edit: I don't think it's possible to undervolt an i5 with XTU.
edit again: sorry, I found out how to undervolt it using XTU so I'll be playing around with it to see where I can get it stable.Last edited: Jul 25, 2015 -
Disable turboboost by setting your maximum processor state to 99% or lower
Also make sure you're not blocking the vents while gaming and also make sure the laptop is getting enough airflow. -
MSI GP60 appears unable to cool itself down
