Anyone play them? Are there any really good, fun ones with large populations?

What is a mud, multiplayer something?

Multi-User Dungeon. Online text-based RPG's, really fun stuff...imagine D&D without all the paper.
I'm not sure how it is anymore, but I used to play one called Valheru back in the day. I think it's still up. -
I used to play Dune Mud long ago (can you tell from my name?). It had quite a strong community and looks like it still does. All based on Frank Herberts Dune universe. Check it out!
I'm thinking this type of game could be great online gaming on a mobile if it works. -
haha, I started with MuDs way back in the day. I remember how excited I was to see some with COLORED text! So if looking at text upon text is exciting for you...

I used to dabble in a game called Vagabond's Quest, is that same kind of deal?
If it is, then yea those games can be pretty fun. -
I used to play one called Clandestine. I stopped playing about 11 years ago, but I think it's still running. Large population then, not sure now.

Is the MUD based on all the novels, or just like the first three or so?
-
I think all the novels totaling the whole "Dune Universe".
MUDs?
