The M170 is not MXM. Although the video card is upgradeable, it's a proprietary part only used by Dell, so it can only be upgraded if Dell comes out with one in the same format that will fit into the M170.

If they come out with one made to work with your machine...then yes.

Their parts are basically MXM...but it's a modified version of it, so it's not the standard, and thus not compatible with other standard MXM parts.

I wouldn't buy a notebook and plan on being able to upgrade the video card; if there is an upgrade avaliable, as Dell had with the M170 from the Go6800 Ultra to the Go7800GTX, then great, but otherwise, it shouldn't be expected.

dell uses a modified MXM..their cards will only fit in dell notebooks. MXM cards will not fit in a dell notebook and vice versa.

    pb,out.

Ah, is this true for all dell notebooks?

For example the 9400? (I think similar to the E1705)

Why don't they just use MXM??? Is this some kind of scam to make dell more money???

Yes, I understand that, but I would like to know if the modified mxm cards can be replaced in a 9400/E1705. Replaced by Dell.

Interesting, I doubt that they would release an upgrade option but its good to know that the potential is there. Even if I had to send the laptop to them, it'd be worth it in the future.
