I am not sure where you see it as a struggle. I mean, maybe it does not run at 40-60fps constantly, but Im getting 27-30 constant frames and it runs smooth enough to play without complaining about anything, driving, flames, shootout, etc. Maybe I don't have high standards for gleaming graphics, but it is enjoyable to me.
and I did overclock GPU slightly.
I would get this game, but wife might not like me playing too much since we have a kid on the way. haha

oh and i benchmarked at video settings --> MEDIUM.
when I benchmarked at low, I was getting almost over 35fps constant.
I really did not see too much slow down jumping from LOW to MEDIUM so I kept it at medium.

It's possible he has a different CPU than you; I know that's the weak link on a M11x.

This is why i what more chose at setting up the game.
Like every game it has shader, shadow, post effects, Lod, textures, water detail, and so on,
and some Physx menu to chose how many particles do you what in a screen, simulation detail, what else :p, pedestrian cloth simulation, (as i saw few moments ago in a forum , i haven't notices yet that thing) tire deformation, gun smoke and blla blla blla.
Or a config file like in crysis that makes the game somehow great in a way you can customize it.

Its a great game but i have hoped for more from Demo. Until final release we can only wait and see then judge, and ask for patches.

Actually I tried Mafia 2 on my desktop computer in signature, all maxed out and PhysX on High 1440x900 AA enabled runs smooth as butter on a desktop GTX 260. 1440x900 is my max res by the way.

You're getting a 35fps average on an R1 with the Core2Duo in the benchmark? Mine does ok at times, but when the smoke and debris starts flying, it struggles... and my average ends up being low 20's, which is close but not quite. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the M11x, but it's just in my opinion, atleast for the R1, a bit too laggy/stutters. Not sure if it's the GPU or not, but I suspect its the CPU.

For just walking around it's fine, but once things get hectic, and when you need it smooth, mine is just not.

On the flip side for comparison, it does stay smooth on the G73, which not even GTAIV does. So, is way better optimized that that atleast.

Just played the demo and I am very impressed. The benchmark gave me an average of 42 fps with all high, Ambient occlusion on, 0xAA/16xAF and PhysX disabled at 1440x900. I used a Xbox 360 controller and had a lot of fun driving in sim mode.

Played the demo on my aged M1530. Used lower settings/resolution and got ok performance. I think the voice acting, setting and story seem fantastic. The gunplay is pretty great too. I didn't like the driving (as is usually the case). I never played the 1st so maybe I'll pick it up someday as I kind of liked this demo. Though I prefer to play these kinds of 3rd person free roam games on PS3, not PC. Controls are usually better for me that way.

I played this one using my Xbox360 controller on my PC. I also use a PS3 controller on my PC as well.

This part I didn't really get. Were mobsters in the 50s somehow obsessed with Playboy? I walked over to to a table, it said "Press E to pick up magazine" (or whatever) so I did and I get this fullscreen centrefold. Uh ok?
