Ok, this is what is going on...

    1) I cannot get to the Catalyst Control Center
    2) 3dMark and PCMark benchmarks both fail to complete (and I've reinstalled them)
    3) Oblivion, when configuring the graphics options, reports the following resolutions...
    • Whatever is normal for it...
    • 1024x768
    • 768x1024

Did you uninstall the driver + reboot before re-installing it?

Yes. I followed the instructions in the GPU Guide. I'm considering doing a CAB cleaning with Driver Cleaner Pro as well, but I know that will hose about 4 of my other drivers and I really don't want to reinstall them.

Before anything, what is your GPU? The X1600 in the sig?

BTW, I see you are at Purdue. I am going there as a freshman in Computer Graphics Technology and Computer Science this fall, what are you studying?

    X1600...yup.

I'm working on my last two years as a EE, with a focus in computer hardware and software design.

Hmm curroption to the video drivers or the registry or somthing. If you cant fix it up with a new install of your drivers.

The next logical step is probably a fresh install of windows :p

Hopfully its just software based and somthing isnt dying in the hardware.

I thought there was an option of "Remove all ATI software".
    Try it out.

I has alot of problems with CCC and my drivers went crazy after I installed dotnet framework 3.0.

I fixed it by doing a system restore to the day before.

I was starting to wonder about that. I uninstalled 3.0 and repaired 2.0. I'll be back after this reboot...

EDIT: Looks like I need to repair 1.0,1.1 first...

EDIT AGAIN: Didn't work yet, though I'm trying one more thing. I'm about ready to reformat the darn thing...again. I'm tired of XP...well, ATI.

it could just as well be the .NET framework. it's real crap

still it would probably be best to use the driver cleaner pro thing first before you format

You can do manually the same thing Driver cleaner Pro does in about 30 secs. You may also consider cleaning your registry of any ATI left overs. That can also be done manually with regedit but not as throughoutly as with Regcleaner program.
More info about above steps here, under section "Old Catalyst Removal" @: http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_3.html

Strange thing is that you can run games, but not 3DMarks. Do you get any error messages when 3DMark program stops?

It doesn't err, it just says when I submit the report it is an invalid report so it isn't showing results. PCMark just says it cannot be completed.

I've been having some driver and performance issues for a few weeks...I'm starting to think I hosed my registry somehow, so I'm probably going to use my restore discs tonight.
