What laptop and which graphics card?

Is 512 MB overkill ? -
Yes, generally, 512 MB graphics RAM is too much. Most cards, even some high end ones, cannot take full advantage of the memory, and they cannot use it efficiently. in the future, more and more graphics memory will be needed, but at present, theres no need for more than about 256 MB. Even that is quite alot for most games.

I think this should do:

What exactly are you getting at here? 256MB cards are perfectly fine for gaming; 512MB has a small advantage on only the highest-end of cards. Check the questionnaire section of the GPU guide for some more basic info.

In every game under different testing methods we saw that 512MB does make a difference, and in some cases a large one. Quake 4s performance increases in Ultra mode were the most impressive here, but HL2: Lost Coast also showed some credible boosts. F.E.A.R was not so impressive but in real world testing 512Mb showed its worth, especially on a system with 1GB RAM.

Now you say that it´s not better to have 512MB memory on GFX ?
Im aware that the GPU is an important player is this, but all I want to know is if 512 MB is better than 256MB memory on graphics cards. -
It's always nice to have more memory on your graphics card, but it all depends on which card you have to begin with. For example, a 512MB 7300Go is still not as powerful as a 128MB 7600Go.
Don't worry about the VRAM, worry about what core it uses. -

Well the ram is secondary to the core choice, if it comes down to the same chip or similar then it can be considered.

It only helps if your playing demanding games on high resolutions at high settings on a top of the line graphics card. (i.e. performance between x1900 256mb and x1900 512mb or 7900gt 256mb or 7950gt 512mb is minimal at resolutions at and below 1600x1200 and only started to show a noticeable difference [i.e. 8+ FPS higher] at 1920x1200 with 4xAA/16xAA on recent games.

Thx for the answers
