How can I make an old game, like the Magic Carpet series run in Windows XP?
When I used to play it with Win 98 I had no issues, but now I can't even install the game. I got nostalgic and I want to play it again![]()

The MAgic Carpet series was also released for the Playstation in 1994(correct me if i am wrong) Since it was for Playstaion there is already a good solution for this, google Psxe emulator(it needs SCPH1001.BIN which is the bios) and you can download the actual game if u dont have the disc from from a rom site, if u already have the game just boot it from the disc via psxe emulator.
Hope that helps. -
They're DOS games aren't they. So, you should be able to run them using the DOS emulator 'DOSBox'. Download the Windows version with the installer. It says on their site that Magic Carpet 1 & 2 are fully supported so should run fine. I use it to run the first two Monkey Island games. I haven't use it for a while, but you have to mount the game folder within DOSBox and then run the game executable.
Below are the notes I made to run Monkey Island using DOSBox on my PC. I have the game folders on my C: drive. So I mount drive C and then the directory of the game. Enter "C:" and press return to change DOSBox to drive C: and then enter the name of the executable of the game and press return. It is easier if you place the game folders directly on your hard drive (not within other folders) so you don't have to enter long file addresses. I hope this helps and makes sense.
Using DOSBox 0.72 for Monkey Island 1 & 2
1.Enter: "Mount C C:\Monkey" or "Mount C C:\Monkey2"
2.Enter: "C:"
3.Enter: "Monkey" or "Monkey2"
Controls
Fullscreen = Alt + Enter
Exit = Ctrl + F9
Restart = F8
The only thing I'm not sure about is how you are going to get it to run without the game's installer working. You may be able to copy the disc contents to a folder on your hard drive and run it from their. But with the original Tomb Raider I had to run the installer and mount the installed folder. -
Oh man. That game brings back memories...
-
Lol how is the game like anyway, i never tried, since the game was released in the year 1994, and thats when i was born lol
-
Shut UP!
JK
What is a 14 year old doing with an XPS 1730 anyhow? Boy are you spoiled! -
It was pretty unique. It's like an air combat game, but instead of a plane, you got a magic carpet. You would fly through cities, using magic to shoot fireballs at bad guys and creatures. You could speed up, slow down, change altitude. And it was also in 3D. Didn't have the game, but did get a chance to play it.

Hey, let the kid have his fun. And at least has a good taste in harware.
-
The game I have is the sequel, Magic Carpet 2, and it's awesome. It has lots of spells, my favs are the ones that causes cave-ins, volcanoes, etc... And I HATE manticores. Damn critters.

lol i was thinking the same thing

[shakespearian]It's from a rich, golden age, during which games lacked the powerful PC components of these times and such, game developers had to use all their resourcefulness and ingenuity to make good and challenging games.
Oh! But now are the days of spoiled brats who only want the best looking games, overlooking those older and yet much richer games. The pain![/shakespearian] -
I am a spolied brat who likes those best looking games. But only if the game is good as well. I do believe in great gameplay, but not if it is stomped by horrible or mediocore visuals. If the game looks great, but is not deep, I don't like it neither. I thouht MC series looked good for its time.
-
Well, call me nuts but there is something about the crappy graphics/great gaming experience juxtaposition that I love. People who played Supaplex and Wolfenstein 3D know what I'm talking about.
-
STFU i am NOT SPOILED. I HAVENT HAD A BIRTHDAY PRESENT FROM MY PRESENT IN 3 YEARS. 3 FCKIN YEARS! OK???
-
The config you have in your sig costs around $4300, and that's assuming it was a recent purchase. $4300 for 3 birthdays means over $1400 spent per birthday presents that you "HAVENT HAD". $1400 is about double of what I'd think a normal 14 year old boy should use in an entire year. You are spoiled.
Unless of course, you made the money yourself/the config price was significantly lower than $4300.
-
Dude, relax. It's great that you can have the fun toys at a younger age. Just appreciate what you've got! Glad to see you're taking advantage of its power and not just playing WoW with it!
That being said, you're still spoiled. Enjoy it. -
you're mean....
well im Azn, what do u expect? -
I found an interesting video for all your nostalgic pleasure:

Ah, Gj, i feel like going into my basement to look for my SNES
-
You can download JNES emulator. It's legal to use emulators as long as you own the original cartridges ^_^
-
Well, what nerd keeps his ancient cartridges?
-
DOSBOX is a godsend. It allows me to run SystemShock 1, Wolfenstein 3D, etc.
I think Steam actually integrated it into any game in their library requiring DOS. In other words, if you get Wolfenstein 3D on Steam, it auto loads in DOSBOX.
Man...it took me like 2 days to get SS1 on my XP system...funny enough it worked in under 30 minutes in Vista. I can't tell if that is just because I knew what I was doing or if Vista has a better handle on extreme legacy titles. -
The fact that I have a box full of 14 year old cartridges of 18 year old titles that are still fully functional as of last week.... does make me even geekier?
-
Its not that you're a geek if u still have those games, you are a geek if you actually know where u put them.
-
I have them handy. Just in case.
-
Heh. I still have some of the cartidges from my Sega Genesis. Not too sure if they're working anymore, since I lost my Genesis 15 years ago. Ah, the good old days, when I didn't have to worry about anything but eating, sleeping, and playing Genesis games with my best friends.
By the way, AznFlamer...
Congratulations. You have mastered the art of appearing spoilt and childish. -
The same sort people who still dust off their old Nintendos for a quick game of Super Mario Bros 3. Why throw out something that's been awesome for twenty three years?
Wow, $1400 per birthday, just from your parents, for three years? One of your birthdays is more or less equal to all 18 of mine. Lucky kid. It's those of us who have to work for our toys that are jealous of you.
Lay off of the kid. It's easy to be an punk on the internet, when it feels like you're arguing against poorly written text, but you're all real people reading each other's comments. Feeling get hurt, people get offended, they get defensive and lash out. We're all nerds here. -
Drop it man....
-
True, i accept that
-
Ok, let's get something straight. AznFlamer is not going on bragging about his system, so stop calling him spoiled. It's not whether we're spolied or not, but it's how we act. People need to stop with this whole jealousy thing.
And for those who still have those 20 year old systems and games, there were some sweet, not to mention HARD, games back in the days, so keep on playing! -
I find it depressing that some of these games, I was better at them when I was 4
-
Does anybody know how can I make Deus Ex and System Shock 2 playable on Windows Vista? I think they're not DOS games so DOSbox doesn't work. Neither activating compatibility mode.
Perhaps I can play them on ubuntu using wine but hey, if I can play them in vista just for the sake of knowing how..
Oh.. and Hexen II. That one I think is DOS based so DOSbox will do it -
You can use Virtual PC to install a compatible, previous version of Windows, like Win 98.
