I normally try to post game-specific questions to their respective Steam forums, but I haven't used their forums in a while and ended up getting locked out for 15 minutes by failing on five consecutive login attempts, so after some unsuccessful browsing of their forums as a guest, here I am.

I played Mass Effect a couple years ago on my laptop. It's been reformatted since then and the saved games are gone. I'm going to start Mass Effect 2 soon, and I was wondering if I might somehow be able to get my saved games off of the Steam Cloud to import into ME2. Anybody know if this is possible? Does Steam even cloud sync Mass Effect 1? Would I have to download the entire game to get my saves back?

Sorry to say this but you can't sync Mass Effect 1 and 2 save files with Steam cloud.
If you haven't saved a copy of the old save files, i'm afraid you'll either have to start over or just go with Mass Effect 2 without looking back.

I assume you want this, so Mass Effect 2 will have those little bit carried over that you did in Mass Effect 1. Then use the first link that amirfoox gives. That will do it. Just pick the save that matches what you did, how you were. You can even pick multiple saves for multiple play throughs if you wanted.

I'll have to check out the save repository amirfoox linked, I guess. I thought I remembered ME1 saving to the Steam Cloud, so I was hopeful that there might be a way to recover those saves for carryover purposes.

It might save to the cloud, but you would have to reinstall the game. The above saves will get you the same thing with less hassle, and more choice. I played ME2, you won't be missing anything.
