everytime i try to click play on mass effect a window pops up saying that Mass Effect has stopped working and a problem caused the program to stop working correctly... I have yet to see anything from the game however my computer should be able to run the game on the highest settings or at least close to the highest settings. Any one have any idea how to fix this

First off, ME is a new game and pretty hardware demanding, but from what you`re saying, sounds like you need to update your DirectX and get a better video driver.

Would be nice to post your system spec and driver version for you GPU. Most common cause for Mass Effect not loading:

    Overclocked CPU
    Overclocked GPU
    Outdate or Modded video driver
Not installed and ran as admin

This also happened to me when I switched to Vista.

Compatibility XP SP2 and Run as Administrator did the trick for me ;)

I was running the game from administrator account in vista Sp1.

I'm running 174.70 modded driver from laptopvideo2go on an ASUS M50sv-A1 in my sig, no problem at all so far with Vista SP1. Can you run the config utility at all? did you do that before clicking the "play" button?

yep...it ran the config utility automatically on first time...and i can run it again also... it shows all my system specs...even the game launcher works...just when i hit play...vista thing pops and says that program has stopped working...looks for a solution (which it never finds) and then i hit close program.... :(

I am using 169.09 from laptopvideo2go.com...i had tried getting a new version of the drivers a couple of months back but it severely messed up my World of warcraft gameply...so i rolled back. I don't know if there have been any new stable drivers out for 8600M GT (ddr2).....but when i'll get home..i'll try to use some 17x.xx drivers... guess its worth a shot.

The only thing I can suggest is to get another driver and give it a try. I was using 169.xx but I upgraded right before I install the game.

    You can also try this:

Right click on MassEffect.exe, Compatibility tab and check the "Disable desktop composition" box.

    See if that works..

Also, a couple more workaround for others with problems.

Turn off "User Account Control" in Control panel/user accounts

Try launching the game directly using "MassEffect.exe" from the Binaries Folder in the installed Directory.
