The traditional rpgs are so different from Mass Effect. I feel that there are things that traditional RPG does better but in other areas Mass Effect shines brilliantly.

With the final fantasy series, combat was never in real time, which was fine because the combat was fitting for its brokened uped story telling design. Playing those rpgs required a bigger share of the player involvement to piece together the different lines of the conversation into a story. You had to keep clicking that X button to get other characters to talk, which I hated alot!

With Mass Effect, you can play through the game so smoothly: real time action, story fillers done through movies, conversations emulated cut scenes to fill the void between major acts.

I absolutely hated it, and I'm a big fan of RPG's, both traditional and action oriented. I couldn't really tell you why though.
