I played and finished ME yonks ago, and i uninstalled it. Today thought i wud boot it up (after being hyped with ME2 teaser) ....but i get an error during installation :(

problem 1. it wont install in default directory because if dont have " rights" BS i have turned UAC off

problem 2. after picking an alternate location, some safe runn.dll cant be extracted and then the setup terminates.
    (C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\saferun.dll)

i googled around, most thread suggested faulty disc, which cant be right since it installed perfectly when i originally bought it....

    any ideas?

Just curious how many times have you installed it? or changed hardware as Mass Effect has a 3 time install limit. This can be fixed with the below link. If it can't extract the files though it sounds like a duff disc.

Mass effect has an install limit?

    This is what inspires piracy...

I was thinking about buying it, but I switch up notebooks and desktops every 4-6 months...

Yeah it did. When it first shipped there was a 3 install limit. Gamers went on a rampage and EA increased it to 5. Afterwards EA released a tool that allows you to de-authenticate your computer so as to get back lost installations in the event you maxed out the 5 install limit.

eA has since stated they won't use that type of DRM again and are going back to the CD check. They are also going to sell their games via Steam. I personally like Steam, makes things convenient.

Make sure you are not sitting behind a firewall. If so temporarily disable it and try again. If it works restart your firewall.

If you are reinstalling in the same machine, it may be that sowmhow the software is detecting you already have an installation there (I know, sounds weird..) so the best option, as already mentioned is to deauthenticate.

Yeah, I have had a few instances where an installation stalled or errored out and then found it to be the firewall blocking internet access. In this case with some walls you can find the games request in the software and allow it, for others you have to disable the firewall long enough to install.
