I have a laptop with the following specs

    Intel C2D T7250
    2 gbs ram
    8600m GT

I normally get 4000-4200 on 3dMark06. I just ran it and got 1800! I did this after my performance on Age of Conan took a huge drop. I installed a new driver last night 175.16. It worked fine last night, but then I drove home this morning and I unplugged my laptop and put it in my bag. When I pulled it out when I got home it was on, the fans were blasting, and it was incredibly hot. I have no idea why it turned on. Is it possible I damaged something? I'm gonna try some other drivers now. Any other suggestions?

what was the temperature during performance dropped? try HWMonitor. maybe the downclocking was due to over heat., also make sure your power scheme is not on max battery.

Leave the laptop off until it is near room temperature, and then try again. It is possible that internal parts are still too warm, and the card is downclocking to save itself.

Make sure the back is a bit raised, if you`re OCing, lay off and don`t game on your lap, keep it on a solid surface, not fabric.
Since the fans were blasting, they work, and that`s a good sign.
Might`ve just gotten warm while in the back pack, make sure you give it a little time to cool off.
Look through the vents with a flashlight and check for dust, if you have it, open the back panel and use canned air to blow the dust away from the inside.

I installed yesterday the same driver version and then I tried COD4 ..... big drop of performance .... I mean the game was stuttering ... awful .. and also kept my fans on very high rpm (usually they are quite low).
Uninstalled and moved to 175.70 .... by far the best video driver since I have this laptop
