    Hi,

Here are my thoughts on this.

    1) I think that glossy screens are really nice in terms of DVD movie watching. Watching DVDs on a glossary screen just gives a very nice, up-market feel to everything.

    2) However, for gaming, the important thing is to view all your enemies out there on the screen! I feel that there is not much difference between a matte and glossy screen for gaming. However, if you are near a bright light source, a matte screen might actually be better as it does not reflect light and cause you to miss a shot or something.

Of course, as another option, you could always hook up an external 24 inch monitor to your laptop help with the visuals :)

Matte screen all the way. Those glossy screens are annoying if you have any light source behind you. Plus I hate looking at my ugly mug every time the screen is dark.

what so the visuals on the laptop will be EXACTLY the same on an external monitor what if the laptops can you do it with DVi (or what ever it is called) will the graphics still be the same as they are on the laptop screen or better?

I like my glossy screen for just about everything over matte screens...

Then again, it does seem to vary by screen.

The Dell glossy screens (I am looking at no less than 2 of the vostro 17" glossy and 4 mattes that are on the bench right now) are nowhere near as nice as the Toshiba x205 I own.

I think I am hooked on the glossy though.
I always think... "poor user only gets a matte screen" when sending these Vostros out.

i don't see how gaming visuals can be any different than movie/flash or whatever that's animated minus all the pixelation. chances are if you like glossy for everything else then you'll like glossy for gaming as well. unless have a lamp over your shoulder then i wouldn't worry about lighting. there's a reason why most people prefer glossy. trends come and go and last time i checked, starting with cellphones, it hasn't gone away :)

Haha, I have to agree with you here. Sunlight is the worst. I like the earthy, non-reflective matte surface for many of the games I play. For me, it sort of adds to the immersion factor. We will let those beautiful people keep their glossy screens.

Just as hard to see in bright or direct sunlight, agreed, though the matte tends not to reflect it back as much in my experience; fewer headaches.

Take the glossy as it`s brighter, better contrast and much better quality look.

Most of that is an illusion caused by the gloss...

Still, I usually choose Glossy over Matte for my laptop screens.

For a Desktop LCD I always go Matte (do they even offer Glossy?) because I find the quality + backlight to be so superior to mobile LCD screens that it doesn't need the gloss.

Also, some people claim that matte is better for true color, in all honesty both matte and glossy mobile LCD screens are terribly off correct color values.

Either type needs to be properly calibrated, so don't base your decision on the "color accuracy" myth.
