Also if any of u guys have used maya or any sort of 3d modelling , is there any background or foundation reading that wud be useful?

    thanks :D

I use maya on my thinkpad. it runs smoothly enough. i am sure your machine will kick some . but you can always go to older versions if performance is too low

you'll have no problem, 3D apps don't really require amazing gpus. However it depends what your doing.

Have fun in that course, maya is fun.

Any GPU would be fine, but, Maya is one of the few apps that supports GPU rendering, so a FireGL or Quadro would be nice.

Your is fine, I am currently taking a maya modeling class and running maya on my notebook is fine (see sig). Just the rendering takes forever depending on what your rendering. There are tons of sites to learn tips and trick on maya, you can start with the basic like learn how to extrude polygons, and makes stuff out of nurbs.

Since it's a beginner course you should have any problem with using a medium-end gpu like the 9600m GT or the HD3650 but professional projects will require much more horse power than that.

Yes. There's still no substitute for a dedicated CG workstation desktop. :)

Kal, have you visited CGTalk yet? Lots of great info and links can be gleaned from the Maya user base there.

If you have any other questions just ask here or there. I'm a forum member there, too.

    Depends what your doing,

for most game modeling a 8800GT would be sufficient. But if your doing like hi poly architectural work, then a high end quadro would be more suited.

Workflow of most games is, Maya/3DSMax, Zbrush, Photoshop/Bodypaint. Something like that.

Or a job that provides it or at least enables you to purchase it with an income.

Also there's student discounts and/or versions that are much cheaper. And there are plenty of other less expensive software (Blender is free) that can be used as far as learning it legitimately goes. Once you've learned the theory and the basic skillset then you can adapt to any of the 'big' production house apps. My software of choice is actually LightWave and Softimage.

Yes, there's the internet to acquire said packages but in my personal experiences it's not worth the headache. Often the software is incomplete to cut down on the downloadable file size. Or the software contains a major bug or requires a performance-dependant update and good luck getting that patch from the developer.

Autodesk used to have a 3DS Max student edition for free. It's pretty much the closest you can get to maya's interface and workflow.
But you can download the trial of Maya or 3DS.
    http://students3.autodesk.com/?nd=m_downloads
Now about Blender... I've used/tried using Bryce 3d, Cinema 4d, 3ds, maya and blender. Blender has the most unintuitive interface of all of them. I tried following tutorials but jumping between the browser and blender was a hassle not counting on the fact that it requires a lot ok number pad use which I don't have on my laptop. Thankfully my msi will have a dedicated number pad so once I receive it, I guess I'll pick up a book and seriously work on it because for a free software it has a lot of potential.
I made this on C4D in high school:
