Ok well I had my Asus g50vt a1 about a half a year now and I like it a lot. One thing that makes me nervous is how hot it gets when I'm playing games. I want to know exactly how hot it actually is. It feels really hot, but it's not hot enough to burn me (it might burn me if I put it right on my leg while I'm playing it) but when I'm touching the bottom and the side of it, it doesn't burn me.
However one other thing that annoys me about this computer is that when I'm staring at a lit-up black screen or I have a black wallpaper, On the bottom portion f the screen mainly the two bottom corners, The screen has a different shade to it. I never knew why and I didn't care that much to send it back (which I will not do unless the computer completely breaks) It is only notiable when I'm staring at a black screen, However when the computer screen is off I can't notice it. I felt these parts of the screen when I was playing Cs:S it felt pretty hot. So I think that the heat has something to do with this.
SHORT VERSION - What is some good software to measure the heat of your computer? What should my Asus g50vt a1 computer heat be?
It only heats up when I'm gaming.

HWMonitor.
http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
You want...
CPU <70C
GPU <90C
HDD <60C
-
However, some people don't care about it.(they play at 90-100C)
GPU-Z can measure GPU temperature as well. D/L, http://downloads.guru3d.com/GPU-Z-0.3.4-download-2073.html -
On a G50 up to 91C eventually for the gpu is normal. If that worries you later on you could always make a dive for my fan separation mod hehe. Plus a bottom panel is only $9.

+1 for HWMonitor.
RivaTuner / GPU-Z are good for Graphics Cards Temperature Monitoring.
SpeedFan is good for Processor Temperature Monitoring.
And finally, HD Tune is good to monitor Hard Drive Temperatures. -

I should look throught all of the forums more oftenly, heh. -
Ok I just did kind of a test. I ran the cpu temp program thing while I was playing some games...
Ok This picture is when my computer is running at normal and I have'nt played games yet.
This is after I played counter strike source for about an hour and a half.
This is after I played Unreal tournament 3 for about 15 minutes (Note that this is also after doing the first counter strike source test)
Now These are just averages, I have many other games that may take my compute power to play such as call of duty: waw and fallout 3.. This computer should also be able to play crysis at reasonable graphics
I was overclocking my Asus laptop with the built in asus turbo button. The normal ghz is 2.53, When I use the turbo it is at 2.7 ghz.....
Another thing is that my computer Is sitting on a wooden desk. I'm wondering if this is also affecting the heat.
Are these temperatures bad for an Asus g50vt-a1 gaming laptop(This computer was made for gaming)? -
-
dang now since you said that my graphics card is is in the cation zone, I'm paranoid that something bad might happen and I'm afraid to game now...
Before I dive into the great task of cleaning the inside of my computer (it will be a first for me so remember I'm a noob and don't want to screw up anything), I want to get a few more opinions on my temps....
btw does anybody know a guide to cleaning the g50...I could of sworn I saw one on this site before -
High Potency Home Vacuum.
1 paper clip for each fan that your computer has.
Insert a paper clip into each fan's intake port, then bend it in a U shape then place the other end of the clip in between other of the fan's blades, so that the fans do not spin when you blow / vacuum air in our out.
Now, blow air into every intake port, for 10-15 seconds into each, once you are done, blow air into every exhaust port for the same amount of time.
Then, vacuum air from every intake port, same amount of time, then vacuum air from every exhaust port, same amount of time, repeat 2-3 times to make sure that there is no dust left inside of the laptop.
If you do not use the paper clips, and the fans spin in the opposite direction than they are supossed to, they might break.
Repeat this every month, and make sure to keep the surface that you use the laptop on clean. -
Issit OK for Nvidia GF 9800M GT to run in 101C?
TS, your graphic card had overclocked or just normal?
I think 101C is too much for a GPU.
Your Processor is overheated a little too. -
-
visit the NBR Cooling Central
I go over the safe and danger temps.
anything more than 90C for a GPU is BAD.... -
Yeah, it is the minimum temperature for some Nvidia Soup with GeForce Pasta. -
Geforce solder Pasta?
Now, they are available in forum.notebookreview.com!(XD joke).
If the graphic card really got beyond 100C. You don't need a water boiler anymore.
Put a pot on the graphic card, you can have hot water too. XD!
@Gophn, Thanks for the link. XD -
I agree, some clean, recyclable energy that does not pollute the enviroment! -
I think I once read somewhere that a vacuum should not be used to clean vents.
Something about static electricity messing up components, but not 100% sure
I use compressed air, personally I think its the best way
Wondering about the vacuum statement, true or not??? -
Compressed air is the easier and most efficient way.
it would be even nice if you can get to the fans to swab them out with Q-tips... but its not needed as long as the fans are still spinning well and the temps are good. -
I use q-tips on the fan, but I'm just wondering if I should dip them in water as I have no alcohol lying around or use em dry???

Well, I'm getting compressed air today. I'm too scared anymore to take of the back of the laptop as I seen it done on youtube. This morning I also made a laptop fan by cutting the ends of of a lacross stick shaft then putting the shaft under the back of the rubber stands on the bottom of the computer. This raises the back of the comp up about an 1 in to 1.5 in.
When I'm spraying the compressed air at the fan should I stick a q-tip in there to prevent the fan from spinning? or should I let it spin and make sure I spray the compressed air in short bursts? -
I want to ask that something. I vacuum my laptop through the holes behind my laptop, issit OK?(The laptop casing or shell locked)
I do vacuum my laptop keyboard, it is so dusty, issit OK too? -
-
Your particular laptop is known for having high temperatures (especially if you have a 9800M GT in there).
I would recommend:
A) Elevating the laptop for better airflow
B) Purchasing a notebook cooler
C) Compressed Air, Q-Tips, and Microfiber Cloth to get all dust out from the inside and outside.
D) Taking off the CPU/GPU heatsinks and applying after-market thermal paste.
E) Undervolting your CPU or even your GPU (although undervolting GPU is very dangerous) -
I will look into laptop stands and coolers pretty soon.
back to my previous question
When I take the back of the laptop off and spray at the fan, Do I stop the fan from spinning with q tips or just carfully spray the fan making sure it doens't spin to fast? -
What is compressed air?
Software or hardware? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
-
Ok. Fine. I really don't know. However, I find it out myself by google-ing.
It is a spray =.=! I thought is something like a cooler or machine.
I found that, compressed air not only can be used on laptop/desktop.
Compressed air is air which is kept under a certain pressure, usually greater than that of the atmosphere. In Europe 10 % of all electricity used by industry is used to produce compressed air. This amounts to 80 terawatt hours per year.
Dangers of Compressed air:
# A blast of air under 40 psi Pounds per square inch from 4 inches away can rupture an eardrum or cause brain damage.
# Directed at the mouth, compressed air can rupture the lungs. -

well, i just took off the back of the laptop and cleaned it with compressed air. Got a lot of dust out.
Here is the new result of playing ut3 after cleaning and after elevating the back of the laptop about an inch:
here is the old result of playing ut3 about 15 mins:
IMrove? I THINK SO
-
101C!!!?!?!?!?!? Is that so called improved??
I think is the graphic card itself heat-up to that temperature not the dust.
Or? you overclocked it?
Arctic Silver is your friend on cooling a processor or graphic card. -
-
However, that GPU temperature (85C) is still a tad bit high. Nothing too serious though. -
I didn't read all stuff because my place already 3am. Eyes blur.
Anyway, great improvement!
Really impressive! 20C lowered!!!(OMG really!) -
Now, TS get 85C. I think it is a good temperature. 9800M GT(I am envious). -
1600 dollar asus g50vt a1 laptop
Although....could make a much better desktop for that much, I wanted laptop..
eventually I'll make a quad core desktop with SLI
when I get enough money
yea 85c I think is good especially if it iis the HIGHEST temp it was at while playing ut3...usually I play cs:s and and half life most of the time..some fallout here and there..but my computer can handle it.
I just need to clean the computer out every couple of months. -
So rich!
I am damn poor T.T...
If you want your GPU/CPU temperature even lower, you can try apply thermal paste on them. However, I don't know much about that since I don't dare to dissemble my laptop. -
It's not that bad to dissesamble your laptop. just find a youtube video of somebody opening your laptop and then just copy what they do -
Just out of curiosity, is your laptop usually in a dusty room/location? Also, what is your ambient temperature like?
But good to know that dust was the main culprit. -
the room is a little under room temp and I always have the fan in the room on. I Lol the desk that my laptop is sitting on is dust-free but all the bookcases and stuff in the room have lots of dust -
I am glad to have been of help, darthvader1432, do not forget to dust-off your laptop monthly, and to keep the surface that you use it on always clean to keep it healthy and working.
If you need any more assistance with keeping your computer's temperatures down, just ask, there is also the Cooling Central if you want to improve them even further using modifications and also, recommendations on Notebook Coolers and Accesories, best regards. -
thank you aeris and thank you everybody else as well.
