Instead of posting these scattered about the board, i'll just post my collection here. WARNING: Large pictures ahead. I didn't resize them.

    Company of Heroes:
    Overall Thoughts:
The 128mbit card makes the textures not so hot looking, but the game runs good. Surprisingly, there isn't a major difference between the benchmarks I got for low-medium and medium-high.

    STALKER:
    Overall Thoughts:
Surprisingly, the 8400mGS performed extremely well when using Static lighting. It's when I changed the lighting to Object Dynamic or Full Dynamic that I got massive stutter and FPS problems. Whether this is a STALKER coding problem or that the video card can't handle it, I don't know, but I think alot to blame is that STALKER was poorly coded for Vista. I also forgot to update STALKER so performance might even be better.

It must be a coding problem as I was getting crappy frame rates in some areas on my desktop 7900GT, even on low settings. Eg in the 3rd picture my desktop was getting 15fps on high, medium and low settings. Similar story with my 8600m gt.

Looks like a clip from some movie with the faces of Nintendo execs edited in.

On-topic: STALKER doesn't look half bad in your static lighting shots there, good performance too.

Oh my god, please don't me you overclocked your hardware just to show your point in this thread. I have the same specs as you do and I don't want to fry my components just to play Stalker.

No, I don't know/ever overclock lol. It just went "Click" and turned off, and it won't turn on anymore. It kills the AC Adapter too whenever it's hooked up. Just a freak accident I guess.

Those are surprisingly terrible Company of Heroes results for low settings, in the first set. Did you try different drivers? I run Company of Heroes on those settings on my Go7400 at huge LAN games to avoid any stuttering and in the performance test I get far higher FPS numbers then that...

I was using "hacked" drivers from Laptop2Go. And I don't agree that those are "terrible" results for low settings, as they aren't low, but low-medium. I hardle consider a average of 50 fps to be "terrible".

Yeah but the minimum FPS is the most interesting - 10fps, which is terrible. In intense multi-player battles, that number will frequent your screen often so it's not good to have it so low.

And in fairness you can't call them 'low-medium' - every single option is on 'off' or 'low' apart from one option.

Don't take it personal like I'm insulting you. Its just a disappointing result for that card.

edit: I just ran the performance test on the exact same settings you have in screen one on my Go7400 - Average framerate 55fps, Maximum 106fps, Minimum 25fps. My Average FPS is about 6 higher, but my minimum is more then double yours and my maximum is also about 40-50 frames higher. So if I can get that with a Go7400 on those settings, you should at very least be able to match with an 8400. So I'd definitely suggest new drivers.

Believe it or not, the hacked drivers gave a better performance. But it doesn't matter, as stated, I can't try different drivers or anything.

The 8xxxM series drivers are still very new for Vista, I'd expect the performance to keep growing as the get those unified shaders working better and better. :D

No he said it was great with static lighting, he just had it with dynamic lighting for comparison to show how badly it hits the system...

Maybe. However, there are multiple games where Dynamic lighting kills performance over static, and honestly, it makes sense. Anyone who has done 3D rendering or animation can tell you that enabling raytracing kills performance. A raytrace with a few hundred thousand photons absolutely brings graphics cards to their knees. My old computer actually locked up completely for 5 minutes under these circumstances, which would obviously be unacceptable for a first person shooter.

I think in the future performance with Dynamic lighting will improve, but not drastically. It's the nature of dynamic lighting to be horribly demanding, as individual rays and their reflections must be rendered in real-time. Just like soft-shadows and 16xAA, I fear for the time being Dynamic Lighting will only be for those with enthusiast-class video cards. I find this disappointing, as I was really looking forward to the real-time dynamic lighting affects appearing in Crysis. I guess we'll have to see how well Cry Engine 2 can pull off Dynamic Lighting and if it's implementation is less demanding on our systems.

Well, STALKER isn't the first game to have dynamic lighting is it? Doesn't CoH have it too? That runs more then fine with it, if it does have it.

It really seems to depend on the game engine. For example, BF2 reports almost no performance difference, but on the same note many people report that there is almost no noticable benefit. In Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Dynamic lighting did have a noticable performance hit, but it wasn't huge. In that game, dynamic lighting looked a bit better, but not by much. In STALKER, the dynamic lighting is more demanding, but also provides a noticable image quality benefit. Only time will tell how much of the performance hit is programming and driver related, and how much is inherent within that level of Dynamic lighting.

i forgot the name of that patch, but theres a 3rd party patch that greatly, and i do mean greatly increases full dynamic lighting performance in STALKER.
