I just bought the retail version of metro 2033 today. The game installed , and right after the a4 games (developer) splash screen, I get a message saying that the metro 2033 executable has stopped working. I googled the problem and all of the solutions I found were related to physx, which I don't have. My system specs are as follows:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
CPU Type AMD Turion II M520(2.3GHz)
Screen 15.6"
Memory Size 4GB DDR2
Hard Disk 320GB
Optical Drive DVD Super Multi
Graphics Card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650
Video Memory 1GB
Communication Modem, Gigabit LAN and WLAN
Card slot 1 x Express Card.
If anybody could help it would be greatly appreciated. I haven't had this much trouble with a game since I played on my dad's pentium 486 back in the mid 90's

It seems you're definitely not alone:
This link has fixes for a handful of major issues with the game, and lists your issue, but doesn't have a fix yet. Always scary when that happens! I think you might just have to wait and see if anyone finds a solution. I'd keep checking that page for updates.
In the mean time, you might see if you can find a way to change the config to disable PhysX completely (there are a number of guides for config tweaks, apparently the game has unnavigable config files for some stupid reason). -
Can we expect a steam update to maybe fix some of these problems?

One question: When the game was installing, did you accept the installation of nVidia Physx? You have to, even if you haven't got Physx capable chip, otherwise the game will crash during splash. Just let the installer do whatever it wants to do.

I just hit the "next" button for everything in the installation. There is also an icon in my control panel that adjusts phyx properties, but I have it set for no hardware acceleration.
-
Have you tried to enable it? Try it. The way nVidia drivers work, the actual physx work is going to be done on the cpu if the gpu is not capable of it.
Good luck -
There doesn't seem to be an option to enable it. The settings tab gives you three choices; No acceleration, Nvidia Physx, and AGEIA Physx. There's a "demo" tab that has a blank box in it, so i don't know what's up with that.

Ok heres I found a fix on the steam users forums;
go to:C (or drive path):\Program Files(or Program Filesx86)\STEAM\Steamapps\common\Metro2033\install \directXdoubble click the DXSETUP and let it install , there is also a compitible PhysX driver .exe in the install folder if you want.
I did this and also installed the PhysX .exe. Now the physx info is no longer in my control panel, but the game runs. You also might want to restart your computer too. Until I restarted, tryinng to launch the game would just get me a window saying that PhysXloader.dll couldn't be found. The game didn't even get to the splash screen. -
I'm glad to hear it's working for you now. Hope the game was worth the trouble.
